REMITTANCES TO SOLDIERS
STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. The Defence. Minister made a stated luent in reply to :i question in the House jestcrday regarding the recent advice received from England regarding remittances to soldiers.
Sir Jninee Allen said: Cabled advice . from London has bean received to the effect that an order has been published statiug that in future remittances wiil only be paid to men proceedJDft on leave. No further information lioa Leen received, by the Defence .Department It evidently '■ been considered by the 1 General Oflicer Commanding New Zealand Expeditionaiy Force that it is necessary to restrict the general payment of remittances, as. generally speaking, our men.receive in pay i all the' money they require while in France or in the training camps in England. Noncommissioned officers who are reverted to the ranks may reduce their allotments, but every effort is made to pre- ' vent their reduction when their dependants, if any, would suffer thereby. Where the issue of field pay has been temporarily suspended tlie ' soldier ■ can cable for a remittance to be used in reduction of his debit balance, and the ■usual field pay can be continued. This is being done in eoine. cases.
