It is 126 years 6ince John Horrockses opened in Preston, England, his first factory for the manufacture of white calicoes. From the beginning it was a rulo of tho founder of the business always to send to the market what ho knew was a good sound.'doth, so that the namo of "Horrooks" became, as it has remained ovor since, a household word wherever cotton fabrics are used. No piece of inferior quality is allowed to be mado r at the works, so that tho name of ' Horrooks' is still the stamp of quality, and thoso who buy "Horrockses" cloth possess the best that is made. '■ The various productions are stocked by all leading drapers throughout tho world, and as the years go on tho sales increase, and, despite keen competition, tho cloth maintains its ancient prestige. From the one small mill of 1791 the groat works of the present day have gi-ovni, comprising spinning mills, weaving sheds, warehouses, and other buildings, covering over 80 acres of ground. In 1887 the firm combined with the wellknown firm of Crawdsons, Crosses and Co., Ltd., Bolton and Manchester,' which resulted "in tho firm as it. is known today under tho style of Horrockses, Crowdson and Co., Ltd. This combination of interests lias created ono of the vastest cotton manufacturing concerns in the world, employing 5000 people and producingi yearly tljo enormous total of 50,000,000 (fifty million) yards of cloth--I'roin making plain longcloths, tho firm gradually developed until Jt. included nearly all cotton fabrics Tor domestic use; .and whilo maintaining its hi"h standard, and increasing business on the plainer cloths, it has gradually created a namo for sheeting, lawns, flannolettes, etc. Drapers stock them, as the namo of "Horrocks" on the selvidge of tho cloth carries to tho buyer's mind tho immedinto cortainty of wear and comfort. "Crewdson's 1000," "Horrockses' Ideal" are names to conjuro with in tho cotton piece goods, trado; easy aro tho sales of tho drapers who stock them, and happy the buyer of thorn in tho knowledge that she has got tho best of ite kind. ■ ~ „. , liobort.
