SECRET BASE DISCOVERED FIVE MONTHS OF WHOLESALE PIRACY New York, July 2, The New Y'ork "World" states that the officers of an American steamer which has arrived at'an American port report that British patrols located a submarine base a fortnight ago. Tho U-boat (suppliers wore shot, and the oil and other supplies were confiscated. Jt is believed that the movements of Allied ships were reported to U-boats from the base.

The Xew York "Herald" Washington correspondent, writing on the "termination of livo months of unrestricted, submarining," quotes a. naval officer's estimate that submarine results are far short. of Germany's programme, of one million tons a month. Ho declares that the total tonnage lost in the first year did not exceed four millions, -while three millions wore constructed in tho samo period—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
