MINISTER OF CUSTOMS
AND BREWERS' LICENSES. In reference to certain remarks tnada by Air. Adauis ana tue Rev. J. Dawson,' at the 6 o'clock closing deputation to the Prime Minister on Monday, by, which it was made to .appear that to the- Hon. A. M. Myers, as Sinister of; Customs, was delegated the duty of is-, suing all brewers' licenses, Mr. Myers, on being approached by a representative' of The Dominion, stated the law in con-! nection with the issue-of these licenses.; The Collector of Customs;" he said, is re-' quired, without any reference to the Minister, to issue a brewer's license in 'any of the following cases-.—(a) Where the license is a renewal of one Iv granted, that is, in the ordinary cases of annual renewal; (b) where the appli-,' cant is the successor in business of a' person holding a license, as, for • in-', stance, where a brewery is sold _to an-; other person or company; (c) Where a. new license is applied for in Hou'of a. license ■ formerly held by the applicant,; but which has, during the previous s\x, months, lapsed or otherwise determined.^ This means that practically only in,; the case of the establishment of an en-; tirely new brewery would the question, of license come before tho Minister at ; all, and as a matter of fact no case has; ever occurred while Mr. Myers has been Minister of 'Customs, nor indeed iorj many years past, in which it has been, necessary to submit au .application to, the Minister. The law expressly pro-; vides that tho Minister shall not approve of an application for a license in; respect of a brewery situated in a nolicense district or within five miles of; the boundary of such a district.
