STATE COAL MINES
Thero was a reference made In the House yesterday to the recent report re-" garding tho offer made bv a Christchurch syndicate to buy the State'coal mines. Mr. Wittv asked the Minister of Mines (Mr. MacDonahl) whether there had been a. profit,or a loss dn the year's working in the mines, and whether the Government was going'to sell the mines. Mr. Mac Donald said there liad been no negotiations entered into with the Government in connection with tlio iiale of the mines. The output of the mines this year had been greater than in all previous vea-rs except one. It hml been 12.5(10 ton's larger than in the preceding year. The net profit had been JiIS.TOII. as compared with ..C'fiOO in the preceding year.
