"The number ou tho roll at the ond of the year waa 53,7Z0, as compared with 23.4-10 at tho ond of 1915-an increase of 722. Tho average attendance was 89.2 per coiit. of tho avorago roll. Tho regularity of attendance was over two per cent, lower than in 1915. This -was hub to tho prevalence of epidemics in the June and September quartern, and to difficulties originating in war conditions. The epidemic of iniantilo paralysis was more disturbing than any other disorder which has in recent years prevailed in the district. The truant officer acknowledges the- friendly tissiatanco of several philanthropic societies in providing clothing for children in need, and also the steady support accorded by tho .Press to a reasonable enforcement of tho law." • ■' ' i "The average attendances the District High Schools for. 1916 were:—Cartorton, 86; Eketahuna; 21; Groytown, 1*; Hutt 18; Levin, 85;' Masterton, 72; JNormal, 181: Pahiatua, 31; Petono, 5!). "The board notes with appreciation the friendly co-operation of parent and teacher with the medical wspeotor ,nn<l the physical instructor in. the effort to remedy physical defect; the establishment of special corrective classes (26 in. tho city and a number in t.ho Wairarapa) has its entire approval.
