SECOND .DIVISION

CHAMBER OP COMMERCE PROPOSAL As the time is approaching when, the members of 'the Second Division will .be called on for active 'service, the commercial community is beginning to realise that there are very grave problems to be faced, and that the sooner they aro faced tiie better! The matter was brought up at a meeting of the council of tho Wellington Chamber-of Commerce yesterday. It was freely stated that, if things were allowed to go on without anything being done well ahoad, the first call for Second Division men would mean tho disorganisation of many businesses. It was stated by one member that practically tho whole of ; tho business of the country was in tho hands, of Second Division men, and that it was absolutely necessary that theso men should have as long notice as possiblo that they are to lie called up, ae it would be necessary ito train as well , as possible others, probably less capable, to take on their responsibilities. It was suggested that each class (as arranged by the Government) should be divided, by medical examination, into three sections', as, for example: (1) Those who , arc certain to bo accepted ; ' (2) Those-who are certain not, to bo called;

(3) Those who are doubtful. On this subject the president and vicepresident wero appointed a sub-commit-tee ; to wait upon the- Now Zealand Employers' Federation with the object of formulating a scheme that they hope'will l»o helpful to the Government, and at thc-same time minimise tho dislocation .of business that may be brought about by the calling up of the Second Division.
