The Waitotara was proceeding to Sydneyi with a cargo of copra aud benzine, and while in mid-ocean a fire, possibly caused by spontaneous combustion, broke out in one o£ the holds, and, although discover* ed early, it rapidly gained a hold and spread -over a great part of the .vessel. The disorganisation usually associated; •with such a disaster at Bea was hapmljl absent, and the manning and dispatcn-. , ing of the boats was carried out without confusion. The captain, who was in hia berth at the time of the alarm, bad no time to dress, and left the ship in hisj pyjamas, losing all his personal effects.
