MAGISTRATE'S COURT
CIVIL SERVANT IN TROUBLE. Mr. L. (5. Roid, S.M., prosided at tho Magistrate's Court on Saturday. Herbert Eaton itadcliffe, chief clerk of tho Mines Department, for whom Mr. T. M. Wilford appoarod, was charged as follows :—
(1) On Maroh 31. 1917. did forgo a voucher in favour of John 0. Brown for £1 He. by altering it to £9 lis., ■ and did utter tho samo to tho Paymaster-General with intent that it should be aetsd upon as genuine.
(2) On March 31, 1917, did forge a voucher for £9 17s. i-n favour of Thomaa Gilmer by altering it to £19 7s.
(3) On September 26, 1916. theft of £150. tho property of the New Zealand Government.
(4) On September 30. 1916, theft of £35 Is. 10d., tho property of the New Zealand Government.
On tho application of Chief Detcctivo Boddoru accused was remanded to Friday, July 5. Bail was allowed in £200 and ono surety of £200.
Albert Victor Carnegie pleaded guilty to receiving from Charles M'Guiro a. mirror, valued at 6s. 3d., tho property of Head and Fcnwifk, Ltd., knowing the same to havo been stolen. He was remanded to July 3 for sentence
A young wliarf labourer named Horaco Lancy. who had been on a drinking bout, attempted to commit suicide on Juno 18 at tho hoardinghouec where ho resided. On Saturday ho appeared in Court,, and pleaded guilty. A urohibition order wa3 issued against him, he was ordered to pay medical expenses totalling £4 25.. and was further ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.
William Robert Shced. who was charged with failing to comply with the terms of a maintenance order at Ohristchurch, was remanded to appear in tho southern city on JiuJy 4.
Two youths named Charles Frederick Frisk, and John Calland' were charged that, being articled seamen, they did unlawfully absent tliemseivee from their vessel. Tho Jads had since obtained work ashore, and owing to their youth tho Magistrate was reluctant to impose a, te»'m of imprisonment. He convicted and ordered the boys to forfeit two days' pay each, and to report to the police once a week for a period of two months.
Tho case against eight firemen, charged with being parties to a. seditious strike, was adjourned to Wednesday, July 4.
James Langley, charged witk being an idle and disorderly person, was remanded for a week. For insobriety Henry Edwards was fined 10s., in default three days' imprieoument; Guy Cockburn was fined 205.. in default seven days' imprisonment; and John Burt, who failed to appear, had his bail of 2Cs. estreated. Four firat offenders wero convicted and discharged.
