"Violet Day" for the Red Cross. "Violet Day" General Committee is a large one, and consists of those who were present at tho first meeting, and all those who sent apologies with offers of help. Tripe, Finlay, J. Macintosh, Carr. Mrs. J. P. Firth and Mrs. M. Myers are hon. secretaries, and Mr. T. Bush treasurer. It' is hoped to make the day a brilliant success, and the' women of Wellington appeal to all to help them. They have set their hearts on raising a large sum for our Sick and Wounded Soldiers' Fund. A meeting of the General Committee will bo held on Wednesday, July 11, at the Soldiers' Room Gymnasium at II p.m. to make further arrangements. It will bo open to all to whom the object appeals, and who will givo their help either in service or offerings of flowers.

Wellington Red Cross Shop. The Brooklyn AVoraen's National heserve have -every reason to bo proud of the effort they rnatlo at tho AA'ellington Ked Cross Shop on Friday last, 'i'hey were able to baud iu ,£IOO for the Sick and AVounded Soldiers' Fund; this help for the Red Cross goes to show the largeheartcdness of a small suburb for a good cause. Ladies at the stalls were: Provision, Mesdames Hopkirk, Austin; Allen; cakes and sweets, Mesdames Strange, Muir, Mather, Pnrdie; plain and fancy needlework, Mesdames Clarke, Eggie,Cameron, Look; raffles, Mesdames Aulin and Chapman. Next Fridoy St. John Ambulance Nursing Division are taking the shop, and anothor 6iiccessful day is expected. Miss Kobicson and Mrs. Moorhouso will be in charge. Messrs. AVhito and Co. and Stewart Dawson have given to Mrs. AValter Nathan, prizes for the camisole-day and ovening' wear—and spojigo sandwich competitions, which she is organising for tho Mercer Street Depot Day on July 13. It is expected that the competition will ■1)0 keen. All articles for entry are asked to bo sent in on Thursday afternoon, July 12; they will become tho property of tho shop, and sold for our Sick and AVounded Soldiers' Fund the following day. The AVadostown ladies will supply tho stnp with home-made cakes next Tuesday. From this month's proceeds of tho shop ,£9OO has boon sent to our sick and wounded soldiers in England.

Mrs. Donald M'Grogor and her daughter are staying at Plimmerton. Mrs. and Miss Macdonald, of AVanganui, aro staying in AVellinglon for a few days. Mesdames AV. Barton. AA'. Toogood, U Speedy, and AV. Howard Booth woro tho Ladies' Committee for tho weekly danco in tho Anzac Club, Featherston, on Friday evening, tho attendance being large. Music was supplied by an orchestral party from tho Camp Band, conducted by Sergeant AV. A. Hose, and extras wero contributed by Mesdames llotop, Carlyon, and Misses Toogood, Bish, and Kilniartin. Messrs. F. Brabant and C. AV. Erwood were tho M.C.'s.

Regret will bo felt at the news of tho dcnth of Mrs M'Coll, wife of Air. Poter M'Coll. engineer in. charge of tho municipal power-houses, whicli occurred at her residence, Kelburn, on Saturday afternoon. Tho cause of <leutli was heart failure. Mrs. M'Coll was a daughter of tho late Mr. W.-Bastin. for many years custodian of tho Lav Courts in Wellington. It is a coincidence to ho .noted that it was exactly a year ago on Saturday since Mrs. M'Coll was notified of tho death of her eon, Lieutenant M'Coll, at tho front, a bereavement wh-ch caused her :i very great shock. Mr. M'Coll will have many sympathisers.

Shannon Notes, Tlio weather was all that could be wished lor in regard to the Basket Fair held on Friday night at Shannon. The Druids' Hnllwas crowded. The total takings were M 2, and after expenses aro paid Mesdames Gibson and Laurvig, the promoters, will have a sultstantial sum to hand over to the Wounded Soldiers' District Fund. Tho musical programme by the "Folly All Sorts," 'composed of choruses, solos, and fancy dances, took place first, then the distribution of baskets, followed by 6upper and dancing until 1 o'clock. Mr J. T. Boris acted as M.C. for tho evening, and the danco music was supplied by Mrs. Shankland, Miss Laurvig. Miss Trcmewan, and Messrs. Graham brothers, Mrs. Davoy playing an extra. Little Mi6s Doris Carter isang a patriotic song, "Whoso Hoys, Our Boys," with a special appeal for "Our Boys," and received something over £2 thrown to her from tho, audience. Others who took part in the programme were Mrs. Shankland, Mrs. M'Pherson, Missed Laurvig, Tremewan, Pederson, Quarrie, Messrs. Bishop, Powell, Quarrie, Casey, and Graham (2), and Miss Signal, from Foxton, who had to respond to an encore tfor her item. The Scout boys were in attendance and -were most useful, especially iu tho supper rooms. Mrs. A. Tremewan and Mrs. Laurvig were in charge of the supper. The promoters of the Basket Fair wish to further thank Mrs. Boultbco and Mrs. Asliwin for contributions, and all tho ladies who kindly sent ■contributions towards the supper. The local Patriotic Society have decided to place in trust, to be used for them, later if necessary, the Belgian funds they have in hand. They also have a fair amount in hand to bo handed over to the District Wounded Fund.
