PURCHASE OF ARMY SUPPLIES
GREAT ECONOMIES RESULT FROM STATE CONTROL. (Rec. July T, 5.5 p.m.) London, June 29. The report of Mr. U. F. Wintour (Director of Army Contracts) on the provision of supplies for the Army shows that the value of purchases made during the war exceeded ,£700,000,000, including .£200,000,000 on behalf of the Allies. The present annual value of purchases was about .£350,000,000, including .£100,000,000 for tlio Allies. It cost ,£0,500,000 to purchase the ;Home wool clip, and .£15,000,000 to purchase tlie Australian' clip. The control of wool had resulted in great economies to the State, estimated at ,£13,000,000. Tho control of ,jute had resulted iu a saving estimated at ,£G,500,000. Mr. Wintour instanced other large economies. —Renter.
