THE EXTRAVAGANT DEMANDS OF LABOUR ' ' FACTORIES CANNOT WORK UNDER PRESENT CONDITIONS m'i j. ~ , j ,V , i.- . Petrograd, June 29. iiio extravagant demands of Labour continue to render the industrial situation chaotic. Workmen often work forsix hours, and then take a dav's rest Wages which had doubled 6inco the war began have been doubled again since the revolution. ■, Unskilled men are making .£SOO a year, and skilled men earn .£IOOO. If the'workmen strike, wages are demanded for the whole time of the dispute, and when tho employers demur they are threatened with execution It is almost impossible for tho factories to continue working under the present conditions, and several large concerns announce that they are closing. The prices of many commodities have increased byiten times. A simple lunch costs twelve shillings. Boots formerly costing thirty! shillings now sell at MO. State control seems tho only method of overcoming difficulties, but it is doubtful if this is possible at present.—Ans.-N.Z.
