MASTERTON NOTES

Considerable discussion took place at tho meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on Friday on a. proposal to rescind the resolution fixing the maximum of patients' fees at 9s. per day. It was contended that the increased fee was humiliating to poor people, who had to go cap in hand to tho board to ask for a reduction. It was also maintained that the increase would result in a reduction in the aggregate amount of fees collected. On the other hand, it was insTsted tlmt those who could afford to pay should be made to do so, and that no hardship would be imposed upon working men. On a division being taken, the motion to Tescind tho resolution was negatived by eight ■votes to five. , It was r ported to the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on Friday that a burglar had entered the nurses' home at tho Masterton Hospital and stolen £S 55.. belonging to probationer nurses. Tho matron suggested that the nurses be reimbursed the amount of their loss. The matter was referred to tho Central Committee, with power to act. There are at present four cancer patients in thfi Buchanan Home at Greytown. The Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board proposed that a special ward be erected at the Masterton Hospital to accommodate those patients. Tho District Health Officer, however, opposed this proposal. It is now proposed that the patients be placed in a special building in Groytown, and that a nurses' homo be provided at the latter placo. An old resident of the Wnirarapa in the person of Mrs. Blake, wife of Mr. C. Blake, died in Masterton on Thursday ovening. Three departing soldiers, Ptea. H. Pritchard, L. Greeubank, an 3 A. Miller, were entertained in Masterton -oft fflnirsday evening, and presented with wristlet watches and monetary gifts. The Wairarapa quota of the Thirtyfirst Reinforcements was given a hearty send-off from Masterton, tho Municipal Band playing them to the station.
