HAWKE'S BAY RACE
JACKXtAN WINS -STEEPLECHASE? (B.v Telegraph—Snecial Correspondent.) Hastings, June 29. CF.aronus wns a few pounds bettor favourite than Merry Jack in a good uetliug , race for tho Hack Steeples. At the start Grey Guard, as usual, went oil in front, while Merry Jack was well up, und Ozaronus .was kept in tho rear. Tho double proved tlie undoing of Surtax and Sensitive, whllo (Jlonriu, run oil. With a mile gone, Grey Guard. Eoyal Patron, und Merry Jack wero together. Down tho back Dood moved up and led iuto the straight, but fell at the last fence. This left Merry Jack in front, and he won easily from Uuion Jack, who just beat Ozavonus. Tho latter finished fast, and might ha-yo got second but for getting entangled in the fallen Dood. Bodenham was kept in tho rear tho whole way, and then finished fourth. Siivor Monarch was tho only other to complete tho course
Mummer and Black Heart divided favouritism in tho Hack Hurdles, and of the twain the former did tho better, but tho weather no doubt aDected Black Heart. At the start Tornca went out in front, but down the back lit. Victoria and Turchauii collared him, and Mummer moved up. Hounding tho bend, Turehana had charge from Mummer and Jit. Victoria,, and In tho run home ho held liie position, and won easily from Mummer. Mt. Victoria was several lengths away, and then canio Tornea and St. Bees. Colorado was running prominently at tho half mile, but ho*unehipped his rider, who escaped injury. •
Tlio Hawkb's Bay Hurdles only attracted five runnors, but it was ono of the best hurdle races over seen on the course. The runners were all evenly backed up, suggesting a good race. At tho start Diavolo led a bunched Mold, the wliolo of the runners jumping well. Down tho back Bon Rovo moved up, but at the flvo furlongs he hit n. fenco hard and dropped back. Then Gladful ehot out, but Sir I'ishcr went up to him at tho last fence, and in tho rnco to tho post ho won decidedly from Gladful. Master Timi just boat tho fast-finishing Bon Iteve, with Dinvolo tailed oil.
AU tho acceptors went to the poet for (ho Hawkc's Bay Steeplechase. Itccord, St. Elmn, Sandy Paul, nnd Soporific were backed in that order. At tho start, Marton led Sandy Paul and Soporific, with the favourite bringing up in tho rear. The sod wall brought down Nita and Soporific and then Burgess led from Sandy Paul. At tho hencoop tho second- time tho leader fell, and Sandy Paul took up the role of paoomaker. At the sod wall tho next time Merry Lad fell. Sandy Paul and Jackman were together rounding tho railway bend, hut the latter came away in the straight and won comfortably from Sandy Paul. St. Elmn was three lengths away, and then camo Marton, Fagot, and Eecord.' Grand Idea- was a few pounds butter favourite than Sir Hnlph in tho TYluter Hack Handicap, for which a very big field went to tho post. At the start Maractotara led Ore Oro and Hythread. ' Rounding the bend tho last-named took charge ajid led into the straight. Horo Miss Satarn joined tho Gisborno horse, and the pair, under punishmont, ran neok and neck to tho post. The chestnut golding got the verdict by a nose. Grand Idea was third, and then came Belgian Maid. For the Ladies' Bracelet, tho top weight, Sleight of Hand, was made a short-priced favourite, but ho pulled.very hard and was beaten half a mile from homo; then Flash Lady took charge and led into tho straight, but suddenly Midnight Star, unassisted by his rider, put in a run aud wou yery cunningly. Tho favourite was a poor third. Tho rider of the winner created considerable amusement by waving his whip hand over his head when his mount ran to tho front.
The concluding event was rnn in a very bad light. When the machine closed, Sea Lord was a good favourite, with Parisian Diamond and Otara next in demand. At the start King Chiara shot out and led all tho way. Entering tho straight Sea fcord was hia nearest attendant, but he was tiring, and Hyllus and Lady Middleton both beat him in tha run home.
Tho totalisalor handled £14,989, as against £16,099 for tho same day last year.
