DISCUSSION BY WAIRAIiAI'A PATRIOTIC ASSOCIATION. .At the ineeting of the Wairarapa Patriotic Association on - Wednesday, communications were received from the Act-ing-Minister of. Lands and others in Dereference to tho proposals of 'the issociation in regard to tlie settlement of tho land by soldiers. ,^ r - A. P. Whatmnn roported having visited Waiiganui. Hawke's Bay, and other districts, and inspected the land •taken up by soldiers. Ho found tho Wanganui block quite suitable for settlement. The men wore in good heart. The Government advanco of .£SOO was, however, insufficient. Ho was of opinion that the block should be rouded. Germans from Somen Island should, lio urged, bo put on to make the roads. Mr. A. 0. Considine thought that prisoners, instead of tree-planting, should bo employed at road-making. Mr. G. It. Sykes, At.P., said that tho roading'of a 34,000-acro block would occupy a considerable period of time. Mr. Whatman pointed out that it was impossible to procure labour for roadmaking and bushfelling/ Mr. \V. 11. Jlatheson defended the Minister. He said tho men had not beon forced to go upon tlio land. Tho chief question involved was that of finance. Mr. A. M'Donald stated that some of tho land that had cost £5 or .£8 per acre to road and. fence was now worth .£lO per acre.
Mr. Gordon Hughan suggested that pamphlets be issued giving returned eoldiors full information as to tho cost of bringing tho land under cultivation. The chairman said that the Lauds Department held that if tho advances wero increased from iSOO to XIOOO, only half tho soldiers could be put upon tho land that would be put on under existing conditions.
Mr. H. H. Ryder did not think il desirablo to place inexperienced men upon the land.
'Mr. Whatman thought £aW advance would be sufficient, it' the men. wcro assured of further advances.
Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby., H.P., expressed tho opinion that the Government would bo prepared to increase the advances. Hβ thought tho most urgent need -OS to procure the land and havo it roaded. Tho same, policy might bo adopted as thaJfc under which tho land was settled years ago. After further discussion iho inaltor was referred to the Lands Co'mmiltoe for a further report.
