CIVIC AFFAIRS

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. Tho Wellington City Council met last cvoning. Tho Mayor (Mr. ,T. P. Luke, C.M.G.) presided, nnd there were also present: Councillors J. E. Fitzgerald, W. T. Hildretn, E. A. Wright, J. Castle, W. J. Thompson. C. B. Norwood, J. 0, Shorland, M. F. Luckie, L. M'Konzie, A. R Atkinson, J. Godber, G. Frost, and W. H. P. Barber.

Wr D. M. Findluy, representing Mr. .T. J. Boyd, waited on t ho-council objecting to tho proposed taking by t]io council of land owned by Mr. Boyd to provide an approach to tho Kilbirmn tram ehede. The itayor said tliQ council would considor tho representations. Tho following came from tho Financo Committee:—"Tho coninijtteo haye to report that tho City Solicitor advises thai. Buckingham Street, Maranui, is a public street; that tho Lands Registry Office treats tho street as a private way; flint Mr. Hayward lias a. titlo to tho land subject 'to certain rights of way. Tho City Solicitor recommends that tho corporation should obtain a transfer from .Mr. Hayward of his interest. As Mr. Hayward has ilitimatod to the City Solicitor that ho is willing to execute tho 'transfer, tho committee recommend that tho course, suggested l>o adopted. This' action will make the council's position neciiro in ppending tho sum of «tIOO in malting tho track." The officers of tho council aro Iα bo instructed to proceed at an early dale ■with tho construction of a footpath at Queen's Drive, between Rhoda Terraco and Tavistock Road, tho necessary money having lioen provided on this year's estimates.

Tho peUtionnrs for improvements at TTpp'cr Duncan Terraco are to be informed that the sum of .£3lO has been, placed on this year's estimate; for vrork in this terrace, whicn Is all thn money that can be spared tbis year for tho work.
