Reference was made by the Mayor at last evening's meeting , of tho Wellington City Council to the death in. action of Private Paul Freyberg. Tfee Mayor said Private Freyberg had been an excellent 'officer of tho Corporation, ami had died nobly doing his duty.

Mr. Hugh Morrison has beon re-elected chairman of tlio Wairarapa Patriotic Association. .

A cablegram was received yesterday from London thut Captain Bruce H. Morison, the eldest sou of Air. C. B. I Jlorison, K.C., has been again wounded lin France. He left New Zealand with tho Main Body as a second-lieuteuant in Colonel Malono's regiment (Wellington Battalion). Hβ earned his lieutenancy at Gallipoli, and was wounded at Quinn's Post by a bomb and sent to England. He rejoined his regiment in France in 1916, and was wounded by a shell fragment in the Battle of. the Somtne, and later received his captaincy. In the fighting at Messines he has now been wounded for the third time. Captain Jlorison is a grandson of the late Hon. Colonel Haultain, formerly of the 39th (Dorsets), who served with his regiment in India and Burinah, commanded a Waikato regiment at Orakau, and was Minister of Defence in the Stafford Ministry during the last Maori War. Captain Morison was a Wanganni College boy, where he was captain of the College Cadets and tho football fifteen.

Last evening Councillor A. Veiteh was given three months' leave of absence from City Council meetinga. Mr. J. Doyle, City Sanitary Inspector, has been granted three months' leave of absence.

Mr. J. Lewis, secretary of the Wellington Patriotic Society, has left Wellington on a brief visit to Auckland. He will return to-day.

Mr. Henry B. Lascelles, of Greenmeadows, who was a well-known figure in Napier commercial circles some years ago, died on Sunday morning. He leaves a widow and a large family. Of his sons, Major Lascelles, formerly of the New Zealand Defence Department, is an officer in England, and two others joined the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, one of whom died on service at Gallipoli, and the other is bow in an English hospital, having teen wounded during the Battle of Messines.

Mr. George Abbott Taylor, an old identity, died at the Wellington Hospital on Wednesday, at the age of S5. llie late Mr. Taylor arrived at Port Chalmers on February 9, 1863, by the barque Colhngwood, and then went to tho West Coast, where he was engaged in mining and commercial pursuits. He principally lived in Charleston, Brighton, and Iteefton. Nearly 40 years ago he came to Wellington. He was engaged here in business as a painter, but later ou he was in. the om'ploy of Mr. Francis Sidcy, auctioneer. His wife predeceased him three years ago. He leaves eight sons and daughters.

To niaTk the recent marriage of Mr. T W. Leslie, custodian, of the Town Hall, the staff of "the City Corporation presented him, through the Town Clerk, with a travelling rug and a case of pipes. These tokens of regard were accompanied with all good wishes for a long and happy life.

A cablegram received from France yesterday announces the death of Corporal H. L. Andrews (killed in. action), eon of Mrs. E. J. Andrews, Britannia Street, Petone. Deceased, who was only 22 years of age, left with the Eighteenth fieintorcements, and prior to onlistment was a clerk in tho Head Offico New Zealaud Uailways.

Corporal Rrtlph Burmaa Adams, aged 26 years, reported killed in action in. tho 'Battle of Messines on June 7, was tue youngest son of Sir. Albert Adams, of Blenheim, and only brother of Mr. A.' 51. Adams, Chief Exeoutive Officer, Munitions and Supplies Department. After leaving the Palmcrston North High School, Corporal Adams was for some years on the stuff of Beutcr's Telegraph Company at Wellington, being subsequently transferred by tho company to Melbourne. At the outbreak of war he returned to New Zealand, and was for some time employed on the Eecorde Staff at Trentham and Kangiotu Camps. Upon enlistment he served his period of training, during which time 'ho rose to the riink of sergeant, and left New Zealand witli the Fifteenth Reinforcements. Corporal Adams was a good sportsman, and much liked for his genial personality.

Dr. Willinm L. P. Gordon, M.A. (now Lieutenant-Surgeon Gordon), loft New Zealand with oiiu of the recent Reinforcements. Before leaving ho was married to Dr. Doris Jolly. Both Dr. Gordon and his wife havo been accepted by the Foreign Mission Committee of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Their departure as medical missionaries is postponed. It is hoped that Dr. Gordon will return in due course. Meanwhile Dr. Jolly is busy with her professional duties in the Bacteriological Department of the New Zealand Medical School.

The resignation of Mr. John Dineen, attendance officer to tho Wellington Education Board, was on Wednesday , accepted by the board with regret. Tho chairman (Hon. J. G. W. Aitken) stated that Mr. Dineen had been in the boards service for thirteen years, and had done very valuable work, which was much appreciated. '.He was now resigning w^ accept a Lottos' appointment under the m»cation Department, aa probationary inspector for the supervision of children under tho cjiro of tho State.
