ST. HELENS HOSPITALS
la speaking of the work dono in the St. Holons Hospitals throughout New Zealand, tho Hon. G. W. Itnssell, Minister of Publio Health, staled: "The work dono by tho St. Helens Hospitals does not ond with thoso patients treated within tho walls of tho hospitals or in. tho homes of tho peoplo in the surrounding disfcriots. A return of maternity cafes treated in thirty private maternity homes established in various parts of tho Dominion by nurses trained in tho St. Helens Hospitals shows 1737 births in the year December 1915, to December, 1916. Theso hospitals aro of all sizes, ranging from fifteen to two or tlireo beds, and the' number of CRses range from 178 in ono .hospital to throe in one opened at tho end of tho year. Tho matrons of theso hospitals, with few exceptions, keep in touch with thoir pa- | tients after leaving hospital. They learn the progress of tho babies and advise tho | mothers as to their treatmont, and tho ] babies are often brought to seo thorn. They also do much valuable ante-natal work, as when booking patients they niako careful inquiries ns io their condition, and advise medical treatment when necessary."
