A remarkable debate took place i" tlio House of Commons on tho proposal to give the vote to soldiers and sailors over nineteen years of age who have fought abroad. The Government was at first unsympathetic. Sir George Cave, Homo Secretary, pointed out; that the franchise is not a reward for public work. The Service members strongly pressed the amendment. Other members urged that munition workers were equally entitled to vote, and pointed out that the amendment would give the vote to soldiers engaged in, sorting letters on tho Boulogne quay, while it would deny it.to those who" are serving the gnus at home. ■ Sir John Simon opposed any permanent distinction between military and civilian votes. ■ Tho Service mombers replied that a man who is good enough to fight is good enough to vote. , . , , The Government finally promised to consider the matter and make a serious effort to secure the vote to all soldiers and sailors over nineteen who have the other necessary qualifications—Aus.-N.Z.
