SPANISH DYNASTY IN DANGER

REVOLT AGAINST COURT. FAVOURITISM LIBERAL LEADER RESIGNS Madrid, .Tune 20. Good judges believe that the insurrectionary movement has been "scotched" but not killed, and may at any time prove too strong. The situation of the dynasty is extremely critical. , Last week .lying Alfonso only saved the crown by the celerity with which ho accepted the demands of the discontented militarists. The groat body of politicians seems to be tired of the King and his clique, who are accused of favouritism in the Army. The revolt is due to the officers with friends in Court circles being promoted over tho heads of older men, irrespective of merit. TJie .leaders of the malcontents havo been arrested, but their comrades havo declared that unless they were released they would be liberated by force. , Differences' of opinion among the Liberals are increasing. Signor Romanones resigned the leadership, and advised tho formation of a directorship composed of the leaders of different tions.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. (Roc. June 27, G. 35 p.m.) London, June 2G. The position in Spain remains clouded. The Ministry explains that it instituted the censorship in order to allay the pre-; railing uneasiness. Tho newspapers are prohibited from publishing news regarding the Army or proclamations of strikes and torpedoings, and havo been debarred from commenting on the war. The Government has filled Barcelona with soldiers, and is controlling other revolutionary centres under martial law. The "Daily Mail's" Madrid correspondent says that the insurrectionary movement has been "scotched but not killed," and may reassert itself at any moment so strongly that the dynasty may have to go. It is stated that King Afphonso only saved his crown in the recent crisis by the celerity with which he conceded the demands. The majority of the politicians are tired of King Alfonso and his clique, and are agreed that they must go before long. Summarising the causes of the late revolt he says: "Although King Alfonso and the Government have capitulated and released the implicated officers and Army suspects, they will go back on their word at the first favourable opportunity and banish or imprison the leaders and the Officers' Committee of Defence. Therefore the Army is on its guard. The politicians are endeavouring to make capital ont of the situation. The Left Party is solidly supporting a change of regime, and is determined, when strong enough, to depose the monarch and proclaim a republic. Senor Maura is considered likely to head the revolutionary movement.—United Service. CONSTITUTIONAL GUARANTEES SUSPENDED. London, June 2G. Owing to threats of strikes the Spanish Government is suspending the constitutional guarantees.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Aesn.. (Rec. June .27, 8.15 p.m.) Madrid, June 2G. The Premier, Senor Dato, stated that the jcoraments of a. section of the Press were compromising the Government's neutrality policy; also that professional agitators and a country-wide alarmist campaign had necessitated the suspension of the constitutional guarantees.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
