The meeting of tho Pctone Firo Board called for yesterday was adjourned indefinitely, owing to tho want of a quorum. The only members present wore Messrs. Ching and Kompthorne, iaBuvanco representatives, and Mr. E. Mothes, Government appointee. All tho representatives of tho Borough Counoil, Messrs. J. W. Jl'Ewan, S. Newlnnd, and J. M'Dougnll, were absent Mr. M'Ewan, who is also Mayor of Potono, informed a reporter' that his objection to being present was on tho public pound of tho Appointment of-a man of German birth by the Government to tho board. Ho held tho opinion that no German, whether, naturalised or not, should hold ' a public position in New Zealand at tho present time. This opinion is slated to be shared by the other absent members. The third insurance- representative (Mr. C. It. Smith) sent an apology for absonca. As far as can bo learned the mattor has not as yet been brought officially before the Government.
