ISLAND BAY DEPOT RESIDENTS INTERVIEW THE MINISTER i . ■ A deputation representing the Island *ay itatepayera and Residents' Association iraited upon the Hon. G. W. Bussell J-Unustor of Marine) yesterday, in order t0 ask information, regarding the propobus of. the Govornment for the establishment of fishery works at Island Bay. A public meeting held-at Island Bay had instructed the deputation to meet the aiinistev with the object of ascertaining iiow the suburb was likely to bo affected *y the fishery scheme. Mr. C. C. Odlin said that tho deputation, which .represented a large body of usland Bay people, was fully in synvDathy with tho desire of the Minister to cheapen and improve tho fish supply in the interests of the general public. But the ju-oposal that Island Bay should bo made fishing centre was. of iniportanco to, 'people who had placed-their homes there, tphe Island Bay people wished to ascertain beforo anything had been done how I their homes were going to be affected by the sohenio.

Mr. G. B'. Bajliss and Mr-'A. S. Col--sms emphasised that tho scheme should Sot be allowed to destroy the charm of Island Bay as a . residential and iholida.y resort. The residents did ?!Qt .wish to interfcro in any >ay with tho Government's plan for improving tho fish supply, but they could »ot contemplate wir.hi equanimity tho ftitablishraent of fishery work's near their homes, . .

The Minister, in his reply, said that he nad given a great deal of attention to the fishing industry. The cost of fish food in the Dominion was atrociously high, and it ought to be possible for the people to obtain good fish at a. quarter of tho present prices. Tho trouble was not with tho fishermen. They were not tho men who were getting tho profits. Ho had •paid a visit to Island Bay when complaints had been made that tho spot was being treated as a backyard of Welling■ton, and ho had been surprised -to find what, a largo number of fishing boats were located there.'. Tho-bay seemed to . bo the natural centre of the fishing industry for the city of Wellington, and lie liad instructed the Marina Department to make inquiries with- the object of improving the facilities there. But he coull assure the deputation that the 'interests of the residents- were not going to. be overlooked. He had arrived at the conclusion that it would be essential to construct a whaTf, so that the fishing boats could discharge their loads quickly and easily, and to provide works where tho fish could be cleaned and tho offal treated. .The works must include a. cool store and a'plant for the manufacture of ice, and the cost was estimated to amount to '-££00(1. This estimate included a power plant, and if poiror from tho oity eldotrical supply were available tho cost of the works would be.reduced. The works would provide cool storage for about 40 tons of £3h, would give the fishermen a sure market, and would reduce tho cost to the consumers. Mr- Eussoll added that tho 1 question concerned the Wellington City Council directly, 'and he proposed that tho council should take.control of the scheme. Tho Government would provide the, money if required, but that might not bo necessary. If tho vouture was a. success, tho Government would establish similar works in other centres. In. conclusion tho Minister said'ho could give the deputation his definite assurance that tho interests of Island Bay residents would bo fully protected. Ho would not consent to any scheme that would .create a nuisance, in the district,
