Acceptances for tho first day' 6 events at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Meeting close on Wednesday evening at 8 o clock. When Boporifio fell in the Napier Steopleohase, his rider, W. O'Halloran, broke a small bone in his foot. The injury villi bo sufficient to keep the Trentham rider out of tho saddle for some time to comc. A feature of tho big Steepleqhasoat Napier on Saturday was the fine jumping, all the competitors getting to the end safely. Tho favourite, Boporifio, hit a couple of fences very hard, and this, oombined with the heavy fall he had on the opening day, assisted to beat him. The Foiton Racing Olub intends appealing against the proposed reduction'of one day of its annual meeting. The grounds of appeal are that the Bulls Olub, which is left with two days, is within eaßjr distance of Mar ton, Feilding, and Palmerston North, so that the residents of tho Rangitikei district aro distinctly better oil for racing than are the peoplo of tho Foxton district, who aro reduced 50 per cent., whilo Levin, which is closn to Foxton, is wiped out altogether. The Foxton Olub also gives more stakes than the Eangitikel Olub. At tho Victorian Olub race's, held at Moonee Valley on July 13, tho Hurdlo Itaco was won by Jeth'er, who was ridden by tho ex-Trentham horseman, H. J. Thompson. The Two-year-old Handicap went to Petain, • who is by the imported Powhatan, from tho Btepniak mare Bercsina. Owners aro reminded that entries for all events at tho Winter Meeting of tho'Wellington Eacing Olub close on Friday next at 9 p.m.
Tho name of Active has been claimed for tho chestnut colt by Boniform—Effort, in H. Telford's stables. Tho bay Ally by Bezonian from Shepherdess will race as BoPeep, and a simiiarly-coloiired filly by the samo siro from Margaretho wl)l be known as Merry Margaret. J. W. Lowe intends taking up Menelaus and Seadown this week. The pair have been turned out for six weeks, and have put on a lot of oondition. It was common talk in the city yesterday that the Horowhenua Racing Olub, which had its one-day meeting taken away by tho district committee, while Otaki was left with throo days, intends to contest tho action of tho committee, and unless tho Otaki Olub voluntarily resigns a day tho mattor will bo tho subject of an appeal to Parliament. . In connection with tho Wijiter Meeting of the Wellington Racing Olub a suggestion has been put forth that as patrons will bo under extra expense in reaching Trentham tho olub should tl\row open tho outsido of the coursc frco of charge. Tho question of transit to Trentham on raco days next month is still occupying the attention of tho committee of tho Wellington Itacing Olub, and there is likely to.be>a deputation to tho Minister of Railways this week. If guaranteed special trains are refused, tho committee will ask that extra carriages be provided on tho usual trains. , Street Singer, the Bezonian—Soprano filly in H. Telford a stables, has again been giving her trainer trouble, and is not likely to bo persevered with further.
