NEW WIRELESS PLANT

At a recent meeting of the Third Weilington -Military Service Board, evidence ivas given as to the shortage of radio-, telegraphists in New Zealand and Australia. As wireless work is of paramount importance in these days of submarine warfare, it is satisfactory to ksow that steps are being taken locally to train efficient operators for the mercantile marine, transports, and military force 3. The Dominion College of Hadio-Tele-graphy, Hunter Street, has, under Government supervision, installed a li k.w. "Marconi ship wireless set, exactly similar to what is used on fhe big "Home" liners. This highly expensive equipment, which is fixed up in a room resembling a ship's cabin, is capable of sending messages 1000 miles at night time, or emergencv calls 150 miles. It is the second installation of its kind in New Zealand —the first having been put in some time ago at the Dominion College, Auckland. This ■ up-to-date plant will enable young men, for the first time in Wellington, to acquire a thoroughly practical knowledge of wireless tele- ' graphy. The course, of training at the Hunter Street College has been approved by the Amalgamated Wireless, Ltd., the company that deals with ninety-five per cent, of the marine wireless vacancies if' Australasia.

A Press Association telegram from Auckland states:—A cablegram from Fiji dated .Tune 22 received here states that Mr. Massev and Sir Joseph 'Ward wore entertained. Mr. Massey hinted at tlie annexation of Fiji l>y New Zealand. When the above message was shown to the Prime Minister. Mr. Massev said his remarks at Suva did not bear tho. construction that had been placed upon them. What I said lie stated, was that T beld that iri,the not far distant, futurn tto should be able to arrive at a ,satisfactory understanding with Fiji. T nointed out that the opening of (ho Panama Canal, which was certain to be a tremendous success. meant the opening of a new era for the Pacific, and certainly would assist in the prosperity of Fiji. !>•= it was in the track between New Zealand and the Canal, thus waWnp it a oort of call for gteaanm tradini .thiwish the Canal from the Dominion to Great Britain.
