COAL FREIGHTS

INCREASES EXPLAINED. Recently the freight on coal brought from Australia to A'ew Zealand was increased by 3s. a ton. Referring to this matter, Mr. D. A. Aiken, general manager of tho Union Steam Ship Company, stated that the Government had asked the company to deliver 30,000 tons of Australian coal per month. This was considerably more than the normal average 'handled with a depleted fleet, and to fulfil the order tho ships available had to be hurried as much as possible. They could not be delayed to load timber cargoes in New Zealand, and had to proceed to Australia in ballast. This meant a big loss in freight-earning power, and the Munitions Board recommended, on this account, that an extra 3s. per ton.be allowed. Air. Aiken stated that tho rates had previously been increased to only a slight extent during tho war, and this to cover increases in waterside workers' and other wages.
