SUDDEN DEATH OF DK, DE LATTTOUK. ■ ' By Telegraph—Frees Association. Invercargill, June 22. Lieutenant-Colonel fi. A. de Laut'our, irho was engaged in work of-the Medical Board under tho Military Service Act, died suddenly at the Grand Hotel thia morning, aged 68. Tho supposed cause of death was heart disease. ■ [Dr. de Lautour (\rho formerly held the post of principal medical officer of the Otago Volunteer District, with the ranlc of. brigade surgeon lieutenantcolonel) was a eon of tho .late Edward ■de Lautour, for many years a Judge at Calcutta. Hβ was born in Noacolly, Bengal, in. 1849, educated at Cheltenham . College, studied medicine at Kind's Col- . lege, London, and in 187.') was admitted with distinction to the rank of associate ■at the college. Tn 1575 Dr. de Lautour settled in Oamarii, where h(> practised his profession. During a. visit to England in 1597 he passed tho proficiency examination at tho War Office, London, a distinction held by very few in New ■Zealand. Dr. de Lautour was a vicepresident of the Volunteer Ambulance School of Instruction, London, and the only holder of that honour outside the TJnited Kingdom. Ho had been practising his; profession in Kilbirnie, Wellington, for a number of years, and attained considerable popularity as a skilful medical man. For some months after the outbreak of the war Dr. do Lautour wns engaged in examining recruits at the. Town Hall in connection with tho recruiting office there. His very thorough meflods were eulogised by General Henderson and others, and it was well established that few of thpso who got through "fit" under his examination wcro afterwards rejected from camp. He, too, was one of the first medical men to point out the inadequacy »if the hospital accommodation at Trentna.m in the early stages of the war.]
