The weekly meeting of the I'runch Olul) was held on Wednesday night, under iho presidency of Captain Barclay. An interesting feature ■of tho evening's proceedings was tho reading of a letter received from a lady in. i'rance, Willi whom ono of our soldiers is staying. This letter, written to tho soldier's parents at Karori, conveyed tho news that ho is well, but was written especially to express tho lady's appreciation of his services and his kindness to her and her family. 'J.'h9 prin-cipal picco of fiio ovening was a short lecture by Mr. J. M. Geddes on. Shakespeare's "Macbeth." Tho lecturer treated of tho historical sources of tho play, and explained that, although tho Macbeth of history did not murder his king in tho treacherous way depicted in the play, yet a previous King of Scotland was murdered by ono of his subjects under similar. cirenn> stances. Mr. Geddes went oil to show tho development of tho drama, how Macboth's murder of tho King impelled him to a number of other crimes, until, hated and forsaken by his followers, he lost his crown and his life. Other contributions to tho evening's entertainment were a song by Miss Stevenson, a recitation by Miss Lea, and an extract from a French translation of "Hamlet" read by Miss Allan. Captain Barclay moved a voto of thanks to Mr. Geddes. Miss M'Diarniici; Mr. Whottou, and Mr. Cooko also expressed their appreciation of Mr. Gcildes's paper.
