THE CENTRE OF WELLINGTON

, WHKKE IS IT? "That tho uremiscs at present; occupied by tno (Jnarilalihs iuu jjepartmont in Marion Street bo leased lur a lurther term of one .Year at ti rental or ASH), and that tno Wd tiao into consideration the providing of accommodation at tho Hospital Idr this aopaitment. WJion tho above recommendation came up lur consideration by the iiuspital ami (Juantablo Aid Board; tho chairman (Air. H. Baldwin) said that it was. in us opinion, tiuio that, the Charitable Aid Committee thought about getting an administrative builiiuK of their own. in tho Hosiiitul grounds. -There- was ulcnty ot ground in the front for such a building, and it would bo more convenient to havo it connected with tho Hospital btock-a separate building, of course. Mrs. D. il'Laren said this would not be convenient, and totally disagreed with Mr. Baldwin's suggestion Nearly all tho cases the Charitable Aid Committee hud to deal with came from the vicinity of Tory and Taranakl Streets, and round about tho centre of the town. The present premises were, sho considered, quito suitable and conveniently located. Mrs. Grace Neill, who said that she had had a great deal to do with the administration of charitable aid in WollinEton, supported Mrs. M'Laren's contentions, and remarked that the committee !had a great deal to do with mothers with yonne children, who camo for rations and rent almost all from the central locality. Tho Hospital "rounds were utterly unfitted as a sito for such a building. Mr. 1?. Castle raised the point as to which was the real centre of the City, and drew attention to the fact that several of thb grocers supplying , rations were business men of Wellington South. There was no doubt that the trend of the growth of population was towards Wellington South, and he did not know whether the Wellington Hospital was not .i truer centre of Wellington than Marion Street (where the Charitable Aid office is loeatsjl). The chairman, who stressed tho value of Mr. Castle's contention, said that if people from Karori and Tinakori Road could come up there as out-patients to the Hospital, he failed to see whv those in receipt of charitable aid could not do so. Here they were paying i£9o a year for offices used from two to three hours a day, ;ghjch was interest on <£1500 at G per cent.—money they could be paying on their own honso instead of on that of someone else. Mr. D. Campbell said the present offices were very central and entirely suitable for the work. They had frequently to deal with elderly people and children, and it would certainly toe inconvenient for them to come all tho way up to the Hospital. The chairjnan had suggested the samo thins at this time Inst rear, and tho chances were that he would torin<r it up again next year. The chairman: Yes. if they re all like you. wo will. Mr. Campbell said that (lie offices were occupied a good deal longer than two or three hours a day. Sometimes they were occupied for eight or nine hours n <loy, and were jost where they should be,. , . , The resolution was adopted.
