KEKKRU FOR WELLINGTON. Laden with explosives the ketch Kcroru sailed from Auckland on Tuesday for Wellington and other -ports. She will probably reach here early next, -week, and after discharge of the local .portion of her cargo will leave for the south to put out tho remainder. Messrs. Good progress is being made with tho work of dismantling the Union Company's Bte.inier Taraivera and converting her into a cargo-carrier at Port Chalmers, ea.ve the Dunedin "Star." It is expected that this work -will be completed in about another two weeks. Some ijlca of the carrying capacity of the Terawcra when the alterations have been completed may bo gleaned from tho following particulars relating to her holds:—Carrying capacity in forward lower hold, 16.480 ft.; forward lower hold 'tween decks. 15.580 ft.; forward main hold. 20,150 ft.; after lower hold. 7900 ft.: after lower hold tkecn decks, 16.290 ft.; after main 'tween decks, 21,500 ft.; after poop 'Ween decks, 8100 ft.; total capacity, 106,000 cubic feet. Tho total cargo capacity, therefore at 45 cubic feet to the ton will he 2J53 tons, and the totl-1 cargo capacity at 50 cubic feot to tho lon will bo 2118 tons. The original cargo capacity of tho Tarawera; including a .part of tlic steerage accommodation, was 59.500 cubic feet. Tho gain in cargo space by the alteration will therefore, be 46.500 cubic feet. The new cirgo-carryingr capacities are being most ec.ually distributed OTcr the four Intended latches. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. F. V. H. Owing to boiler troublo the Defender has been further delayed at Westport.' Gull Eock, near Auckland, was -visited on Thursday by tie Hincmoa, and yesterday tho .-vessel wa-s taking in stores and bunkers. She leaves Auckland early on Monday for tho more northern lighthouses. As the Hawcra. is malting a, special trip from Patea to Tarakoho end back to Patea she is not due in Wellington for some days.
On her triD north this time the Corinna will omit the usual can - at Wellington. She should get here about the middle or end of next week, when she will probably load for the south. The Karu and Kini are both timed to leave Greymouth to-day for Wellington. The first-mentioned brings a cargo of timber, and the Kini a full load oE coal, which will be discharged at Miramar. On her next trip south the Mbnowai should leave Auckland at noon on Monday. It is exnecfflP that the Opawa, which hos been undergoing overhaul at Blenheim, will cot-here on Tuesday next to go on the Wellington Slip, after which she. will recommence running in the WellingtonBlenheim trade. It should be definitely known to-day when the Awahou will he leaving Wellington for northern ports under her now owners. A crew wa-s signed on-yester-day, and the vessel should be ready to get away on Monday or Tuesday. Are oversea steamers going to be bigger or smaller after the war? asks the I)une'din "Star." Jtost, people 'says "bigger," but some say "smaller." Those who. incline to the latter idea are basing their calculations to some extent/ on present capacities of American shipbuilding yards, whioh can launch, iu a given time, a greater total of tonnage in medium-eized than in -very large steamers. On the other hand, authorities in Britain hold that, the war wastage in tho mercantile marine is going to be made good by big vessels of great draught. One of these authorities works it out like this: A vessel of 500 ft. length, 60ft. beam, and 27ft. draught will carry cargo at a minimum cojt to the shipowner of Bs. 6d. per ton; a vessel of 700 ft. length, 60tt: beam, and 27ft. draught can carry at a cost of lls. 6d. per ton. So far the advantage is distinctly in favour of the smaller vessel. But take o, vessel of 700 ft. length with an 84ft. beam and a 38ft. draught, and her cost per ton is 75., as compared to tho others' Bs. 6d. and lls. 6d. Thu? Britishers count'on big-draught vessels after the war.
