MILITARY SERVICE BOARD

YESTERDAY'S BUSINESS.

The First Wellington Military Service Board resumed its sittings in WeOingJ tou yesterday morning. The board coiw sists of Messrs. I). 6. A. Cooper, S.M., D. M'Laren, and W. Perry. Captain Walker is the military representative.

H. S. Smith, a young steward, wh<* had come ashore on account of tho bal-< lot, appealed for exemption on tha ground of public interest. Mr. A. H< Hindmarsli appeared for the appellant, and read a letter from the Union Steam Ship Company, starting that Smith was a good steward, and that stewards were at the present time very difficult' to otH tain. The company would employ Smith immediately if exemption were granted him. The board dismissed the appeal, and granted the appellant leave till July 24. Mr. Kennedy, Wellington manager for; tho Union Steam Ship Company, ajv peered in support of a number of appln cations for the exemption of marine ofii-> cers and engineers.

Captain AValker contended tiiat itt these cases, as well as in the cases oS fireman and seamen, at least twelve months' sea service prior to the passing of the Military Service Act should ba proved. Mr. Kennedy agreed. The board allowed twenty-two of tha appeals, adjourning the cases sine die. Four were dismissed.
