THE "SILVER BULLET" SCHEME
JOINT MEETING APPROVES BIG rUSH FOR MONEY IN THE .SPRING At Tuesday's meeting of Ihe Wellington r.'ilrioti'i'. Society there were pre-jtsenl:--'.l'ht) Hon. .1. O. W. Aitkcn, M.1,(.\, Lieutenant-Colonel I.'. J.). Mackintosh, Messrs. .lames M'liilosli. Alexander Macintosh, 1.1. M'l.uivn, .1, W. .Helliwell, (Jliupmaii, lirowHiigg, Mather, I''.. .1. Collcy, and Me«M - s. S. Kirkcaldie, (I. Shirt'cliu'o, and ]~ U. .11. Tripp (tho llirco latter n sub-conimitlco from the War Relief Association). The chief business of (he evening was Iho consideration of tho society's proiwswl monoy-raising schciuo for war relief, and at. tho invitation of tho society Mr. Lints wa.s present, and explained tho operation of Iho "Silver Bullet." campaign, (of which he had been appointed organiser) for Iho benefit of tho War Relief Association delegates present. After Mr. Linls bad outlined tho scheme, Mr. Ailkon said that ho was quito 'satisfied with tho idea, and thought it should be, very successful. Jlo had every, confidence that it could bo carried through to a successful issuo. Mr. L. 0. H. Tripp said (hat the War .Relief Association had been established since .tanuary 1, 1!)10, since which time the association had disbursed -811,000 in war relief up to Iho cud of last month. During Iho last six weeks the applications had increased by SO per cenk.ii ml in a fow weeks now (hey expected thai: the Second Division, would be. called upon, when the number of claims was Rliro lo be a great deal heavier than at. present, and they wero almost certain lo bo short of money. Mr. George Shirlcliffo heartily, agreed with the scheme, and said ho knew that further money would bo urgently wanted. Ho believed that (he work of tho TVar Relief Association would, have lo be carried on for a loug timo after tho war. The scheme appealed lo him as a, clean way of raising funds, and ho regretted lhat certain methods of raising money which had been practised all over (he Dominion had not met with everybody's approval. • The Hon. .T.G.W. Aitkcn said that he happened to bo Mayor- of Wellington when tho Boer War was on. and was concerned in the work of raising and disbursing money for tho needs of returned soldiers and their necessitous dependants, and" ho could toll them that help was waated years after that war was over, which was a. mere bagatelle lo tho present big war. Ho believed that help would be needed by soldiers and their dependants for a generation after tho close of the present war. As a member of tho Military Appeal Board, Mr. P. M'Laron said bo could testify lo the hardship thaf: war was inflicting in. many quarters. Ho spoke highly of Mr. Liuts's scheme, which ho had seen in oporatiou in Wanganui a fow months ago. Mr. A.-Macintosh also approved the scheme.
Mr. Shirtolifie. moved, and Mr. C. M. Luke seconded, and it was unanimously carried:—"That no art union or raffle lake place during tho period of tho campaign." A further combined meeting of (he Society and War Relief Association will be hold on July'll, when the Mayor's Patriotic Committee, the Y.M.C.A.., St. John Ambulanco Association, and the Salvation Army will bo invited lo send representatives.
