EABLY MEDICAL EXAMINATION A NECESSITY BUSINESS MEN'S VIEWS At tho meeting of the council of the Central- Chamber of Commerce yesterday, .tho chairman (Mr. C. M. Luke) stated that tlio sub-committeo appointed for the {purpose had considered matters concerning tho calling up of tho Socond Division, and submitted the following lecoinluendation:— "Thai tho chamber endorse tho opinion of the Second Division ■ •Uaguo throughout tliß Dominion that adequate pensions and allowances should be provided for dependants. Tho chamber is of tho opinion that tho Defence Department should arrango with medical practitioners to 60 systematise their work as to enable men to be examined as early as possibles before tho ballots aro held, and thereby minimise industrial disorganisation." '; Mr. Luke said that it was a vital and important question that before men of tho Second Division were balloted for land called up, there should be some system that would provide for medical extimination by the right authorities inor<ler to ascertain who were fit, m a milit tary sense, to be called Tip. That should •lie done as soon as possible eo that men imieht bo given as long as possible to tmake arrangements about their businesses and professions. It was as nvuoh to tho interest of the men themselves as it was to the country at large that this should Jbo done. • Mr. W. Smith asked if it were known bow many young men becamo of military age each year in New Zealand. Tho chairman said that the number, Jie was informed, was about 10,000, a proportion of which would not be lit for active service. Hr. L. A. Edwards thought that the proposal was a good one. Everyone who liad a business and wno was liable tor service would have to see that all the responsible positions were understudied. Ihe resolution was carried. RESOLUTIONS BY EMPLOYERS' FEDERATION. At a meeting of the Advisory Board of tho ftevr Zealand Employers' Federation, held yesterday, the following motions wore adopted:— "That a subcommittee be set up, consisting of the president and the eecre- . tary, to confer with, representatives of the .Second Division League, also to interview Surgeon-General Henderson and other officials, with the object of formulating some practicable scheme which ■will result in as little dislocation of ■business as iwssible, for reference to district associations, and 6ubject k their approval to make representations to 'Government in connection with the 'Matter." ■ ' ' "That this meeting considers that steps should be taken to discontinue the holding of territorial camps and ' training •luring tho period of the war, and'that strong representations be made to the Minister of Defence in this connection."
