AUSTRALIA'S CONTRIBUTION
The official return compiled by tho Federal Defence authorities shows that from the beginning of the war to April 30, 1917, Australia has contributed to tiie war no fewer than 361,919 men., While all the States have sent forward many men, the best response has been from Western Australia, wfoero 9.16 per cent, of the entiro ponulation has enlisted. In New South" Wales the percentage of recruits is higher than is indicated by the figures euipplied. This is accounted for bv the fact that recruits from Broken Hill are included in the South Australian total, and Riverina is in the Victoria military district, while those from the northern rivers go to the Queensland military district. Of the total number of male persona of all ages in Australia, according to the census in19U, 14.18 per cent, has enlisted. In the above table New South Wales is credited vrith the recruits enlisted in its military district only, whilst the figures in the last column are the percentage of the whole State. Thus. New South Wales recruits hern to increase the percentages of Victoria,. Queensland, and South Australia. The figures for the mother State suffer correspondingly.
