HELP FOR THE UPPER HUTT ORPHANAGE

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. [ Eminently, successful was tho musical ;»evening aud danco afterwards held at i the Upper Hutt last evening in aid of St. Joseph's Orphanago (bettor known as the Upper Hutt Orphanage). The hall was well filled at an early hour, and the first item of tho programme was the dancing of Miss Dons Guise's little pupils. The children performing were the Misses Ngaire Williamson, Kathleen Keece, Violet Whyto, Mollie Ellis, and Mollie Griffiths. Miss Mary M'Keowen, who is not unknown to Wellington audiences, sang "Kathleen Mavourneon," and for an encore gave "Keep on the Sunny Side." Mr. Norman Aitken and other members of the "Charley's Aunt" Club gave much, pleasure with their items, each, being deservedly encored. Messrs. F. Crowther, C. Fife (violins), and F. M-Donald (humorist), from Trentham Camp, also contributed to the programme, and last but not least was Master Fergus Reeves, who contributed recitations. The dancing commenced later in the evening, and, there being plenty of partners (some of tho soldiers having come alt the way from Featherston, together with the large Jiuniber from Trentham) and a good floor, with excellent music, everyone enjoyed themselves fully. An orchestra supplied the music, with Miss E. M'Guinness as pianist. The stage had been arranged by the secretary and her assistant , ;, with red, white, and bluo bunting and pot plants. Supper was laid in the room adjoining, and was in charge of a ladies' committee. The orphanage, wherein are over 170 children, should receivo a goodly sum as the outcome of the soldier-pro-moters' effort. At the conclusion of the evening Mr. Levin briefly thanked the performers, who at much inconvenience had motored out from town to assist the cause. He particularly referred to tho excellent and indefatigable services of the secretary, Miss Golder, through whoso efforts tho gratifying result was mainly due. The promoters desire to gratefully acknowledge, contributions towards the fund from: Mrs. Jacob Joseph (Wellington), Mr. R. Quinn (Trentham), Mrs. Young (Upper Hutt), and also to tho many who so readily gave their assistance. Further contributions may be sent to the secretary, Miss A. Golder, Main Road, Upper Hutt, and parcels of clothing, etc., may be left at Messrs. Wliitaker Bros., booksellers, Lambton Quay. .
