A meeting of tho ,workers in connection with Surprise Bag Day was held in tho Y.M.C.A. rooms in Willis Street yesterday afternoon. Mrs. J. It. Gibbons presided. The chief business of the mooting was the presentation of the balancesheet setting out the details of expenditure and receipts of last Surprise Bag Day. , General expenses totalled ,£2O 4s. 9d., in which was included cartage, advertising, secretary's expenses, sundries. Cash placed in tho bags amounted to .£l6 55., and purchases for the bags totalled the 'sum of .£l7 9s. 3d. The receipts were as follow: .£1077 ss. Bd. for the sale of bags,' and donations in cash .CIS 10s. As a result of the effort there is now a balance in , the bank of ,£ll9l 16s. Sd. The balance-sheet was audited by Mr. .Tames ll'lntosh, complimentary references being made by him as to tho business-like way in which matters had been handled. In discussing the allocation of the money it was decided that ,£SOO should be. expended for the beneiit of the New Zealand men in Mesopotamia. Mrs. Leicester, Mrs. Gibbons, and Mrs. Lynch, were deputed by the meeting to 'make inquiries as,to the best method of making provision for these men, the result to bo stated at a later meeting. It was further decided that £"MI should be expended, through the Y.M.C.A., for tho I benefit of the men in Egypt, as it was stated at the meeting that they did not fare so well as their fellow soldiers in France and England. According to a previous pledge, .£IOO is to be given for the men in the convalescent camps at Home. In this way our sick and wounded soldiers in Egypt and Mesopotamia, as well as England, should be provided with,a not inconsiderable alleviation of their' sufferings from this little band of Wellington women workers. Mrs. Gibbons paid a warm tribute to the work of Mrs. Leicester as secretary, her reliability and thoroughness, and ou behalf of tho committee presented her with, a casserole in a. silver stand. In thanking the committee for their appreciation and gift, Mrs. Leicester considered that the gift was most uncalled-for, as she had worked no harder than other membors of the committee, a statement which was disputed. The question of a guild for future occasions was left for further discussion. A vote of thanks to Mrs. Gibbons for her work was passed by tho meeting. Returned Soldiers' Club., A very enjoyablo concert was arranged by Mrs. T. 11. Jones, and hold at tlio Returned .Soldiers' Club on Thursday evening. The programme was very good, the vocafiets being Misses Dorothy and Peggy Jones, Messrs. J. Searle, Pringlo, and Captain. M'Farlane, all of whom were encored. Little Miss Hita Magee lighted the audience by her reciting. Instrumental quartets were played by Misses Turner (2) and Heinemann (2), for which they were recalled. Miss Heinemaun also played a violin solo. ■ Mr. S. Ililliker contributed a N 'cello solo,' for which he was applauded. The accompanists wero Mrs. M'Farland, Misses Chapman and Heinemann. Miss Kathleen Brady kindly, played the music for tho dance, which was held in the large hall upstairs.
A very pleasant afternoon was held at Mrs. .1. A. Fuller's residence, Seatoun, on Juno 13, the .occasion-being this presentation of badges. to the Soatouiii and l&iraksi Bay Sewing Guild by the president, , Mrs. Townsend, who congratulated the guild on the splendid work they aro doing for our soldiors. Mrs. Thomas Trim, of Wellington Terrace, provided a very enjoyable entertainment for tho soldiers in the Victoria Hospital on Thursday night. Contributing to tho programme ivero Mrs. Trim, Misses Zelma Huso, Jfyra Sawyer, and Myrn. Gawler (with songs), Miss.M. K. Gillfillian (solos oh the Japanese fiddle), Miss Iris Trim (musical monologues), Messrs. A. L. Picl;ctt and .T. Sawyer (songs), Messrs. Colin Trim ami Walter Wood (recitations). Miss Gawler and Mr. Sawyer were tho ncoompanists. During the evening cigarettes and sweets were distributed anion;; the soldiers by tho Misses Hugo, and this little kindness was greatly appreciated. Sister Tliull entertained the party at supper after the concert.

Returned Soldiers' Hostel. Tho monthly jncetiug , of the Keturned Soldiers' Hostel Committee- was hold this week. Present were: Mesdamce Lovvcy, Fletcher, Boden, and Misses Myers (chairwoman), aud Maddison. Apologies were received from Mesdaines Wilford aud Hadcliffe. Mrs. W. Nathan having consented, 6ho was duly elected to the vacancy caused by Mrs. Jones's departure for England. Sirs. ,T. H. Lowry (Okawa) ivas elected patroness,, in acknowledgment of tho great interest sho has taken in the hostel. Mr. Sutherland' reported the Crippled Soldiers' Art Union as going well, and nsked for sellers on Friday's and Saturday's streot sales. The committee would bo glad to receive names and offers for this work. .The Berhamporo branch, W.N.R., have kindly offered to make pickles, sauces, and jams if tho materials are provided. Anyone possessing onions, etc., to spare will help by notifying the matron or hon. secretary. .Miss Sinvmonds, Newtown, has ' donated: a prettilvdressed doll, valued at £5, and Mr. Coylo (a returned soldier) a very handsome 1 chess and draughts table, the top of which is a bevelled mirror. Tho hon. secretary was instructed to obtain permits to raffle these, as requested by the donors. A special vote of thanks was moved towards tho Hutt Patriotic Guild, who liavo so regularly supported the hostel, and who have offered to make a special effort to again assist tho funds. Thanks are also due to Mrs. Charters, Lyall Bay, for regular supplies of bovril; Berhamporo W.N.8., cakes and entertain ment; South Wellington Nursing Division, immense pumpkin; Miss Trainor, books; British Empire Trading Company, tobacco. A returned man from Taranaki expressed to the president and hon.' secretary his appreciation of the comforts of the hostel. "The matron and staff treat 113 like a mother and sisters would do," he said. And this is just what the committee desires to hear. Y.W.C.A. , Notes, The speaker at the Sunday service tomorrow afternoon at 4.15 will be the Rev. B. Hutson, his 'subject being "Christian Growth." All girls and youiig women are invited to tho Y.W.C.A, clubrooms, Fowlds's Buildings, for this meeting, and to stay for the tea and song service. In preparation for the literary circles, which meets with the leaders in this corning week, Miss Englaud (the president) gave a short sketch of Kipling's life and environment, which led him to place great stress, on the actual doing of work. The members looking forward with interest to tho study of "Puck." Intending members should enrol at; once for the central circle at the Y.W.C.A. clubrooms, Powlds's Buildings, the first meeting being Monday,! Juno 18, at 8 p.m. ' ' 1 , The educational department of, tho Y.W.C.A. has arranged for tho second term of classes, commencing June 18, to include art, craft, elocution, homo nursing, and book-keoping, as well as continuing dressmaking, physical culture, and shorthand speed. ■An opening for training in gardening has also been made. The candidates will give three months to train under a practical gardener before being eligible for an appointment.
