SOLICITING FUNDS WITHOUT A PERMIT
A MAORI FINED. In the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, before Mr. W, G. Blddell, 8.M., a Maort named Pukekawa, Paul, of Orakei, Auckland, was charged that, not being the holder of a permit under Section 13, of the War Funds Act, 1915, he did Eollolt contribution to a, war fund. The defendant had handed a. handbill to 85 different persons in the city. Tho handbill Who aB follows:— NATIVE WAR RELIEF- FUND, Orakcl.- Auckland. 1917. Dear SirOwing to the- decrease of the natives in tho Pacifio during the war who wero.' drafted ou various occasions, it has become a s matter of great urgency that the needy dependants of thoeo who havo fallen and' invalid soldiers should receivo some pnblio consldera. Hon. A Nativo Board ia endeavouring to raise euffiolent funds in order to carry out thia purpose, but are unable to obtain the amount required from the Nativo people. You aro therefore earnestly requested to make e, reasonable contribution in aid of tho purpose abovo named. All donations will bo publicly acknowledged.
