APPEAL FOR A TRAFFIC INSPECTOR
OPPOSED BY TRAMWAY MEN. l!y Telegraph-Press Association. Auckland, June 11. , Au appeal by tho Auckland Tramway Company for tho exemption of Vaughau iWalKer, Chief 'i'rairic Inspector, camo before the First Auckland Military Service Board to-day. Thoinanagcr.Mr. J. J. Walklake, said Walker could not be replaced, and his loss would cause serious inconvenience to the public. Mr. Wnlklake btated that of 700 employees at tho outbreak of tho war 100 had volunteered, cind thero now remained 100 men of tho J'irst Division, and 100 of tho Second {Division, and others ineligible for service. Protests wero mado against the appeal Jj.y the Tramway Officers' Association and tho Workers' Union. Members of tho latter declared that other men in tho ecrrico wero capable of discharging Walkers duties, and they objected to a First {Division man being cx^pted. The board decided that another man icould bo trained'for tho position. Lcavo nmtil October was gTanted.
