THE MAN AND THE CARPET

WANTS TO STATE HIS VIEW HATTER BEFORE MILITARY SERVICE BOARD On Monday the Pirst Wellington Military Service Board had mentioned before it the ca=e of a solicitor of -whom it was said that he agreed to work in thePublic Trust Office only on conditions that could not be agreed to. One' of the things the board was told was that he did not like the carpet in his room, and another was that he did not want ,to work, but merely to superintend work. During yesterday's sitting of ths Iraard a cit.y solicitor and another man arrived at the board room, and after a, whilo one of them handed the secretary ii note. The missive went tho rounds of the members of the board, and after a while the chairman asked if Mr. was present. Mr. , the city solicitor'mentioned above, stepped forward. Presumably an effort was being made to have the matter reopened by securing for the unnamed lawyer of the day before permission to state "his side of tho affair. The chairman: I don't think it would be desirable to refer to this matter. No one knows who the man is. The v man's advocate: The man ii known. What is reported to have been said is <o grossly untrue that it pre. indices him in the eyes of the profession. The chairman: But tio one knows hij name. The advocate: Xo one knows it officially, but it is known in tho Publjn Trust Office and br the solicitors. JTn has been spoken to on the matter by ■several people during the morning. As Hie other side of the case has been put lrefore the board I ask that he should be allowed to make his statement. The chairman: I think that yon had better allow tho matter to Test whereMr. D. M'Laren (a member of t.hn board): Tho board doesn't know tho namn of the man. The advocate: The morning paper said that Mr. MncdonaM (Public Trust Solicitor) volunteered to give tlio board thn name of the man, and the board Tcadily accepted. Mr. MTiaren: Oh, no! -That is not right. The board did not havo tho nsi mo of the man. Ths advocate: "Wrtl, I am only going on what appeared in the paper. Mr. M'Laren: The lioard docs not know the name of the man. The chairman: As a matter of fact, it was handed up to the board, but I have forjotten it. The advocate: Tho man is a solicitor of good' position, who undertook to do work in the Public Trnfit at eome sacrifice. The story told of him is wrong. The reference to his not liking the carpet on the floor of - tho room in which lie had to work is a lot of silly rubbish. The chairman: Still, I don't think that i't would be well to go into the matter. He is not known, and tho thing should be allowed to drop. The advocate: Well, then he wont got the benefit of a publio statement The cliairman: If they both come along we might be able to do something. '',' Mr. M'Laren: Bring ttem both along, and wo will liold the stake. Tho advocat": Bo I take' that as a serious suggestion? The chairman: If they both, come together wo may liear what they hive to say. Tho advocate: Then can I put it to Mr. Macdonald that the board will "heal ue if we both oome along? The chairman: Ob, I don't say that.
