TREASURY FIGURES
FOR MONTH OF MAY
REMARKS BY THE MINISTER
The Huu. Arthur M. Myers, ActingMinister of Finance, has furnished the accompanying particulars relating to tho rovenuo jukl expenditure lor the mouth, of Mnv.
In commenting on Hie figures tho Minister said: "It will bo noticed that the total revenue for the iirst two mouths of the current year is greater by £93,220 tliau tho revenue for the corresponding months of Inst year. Tho increase is due principally to income tux. As was to bo exp-euted, there has been a falling-off in both Customs and railway rereuue.
"The erpeditme for tho two months shows an increase of .£287,902 on the correspoiiidinK period of laat year. This ia partly <lue tu the additional pensions payable, and also to the fact that interest and suiting fund charges naturally grow heavier year by year, as "now loans are raised. A good deal of the increase, however, is explained by tho fact that in ! several Departments expenditure has been brought to charge more promptly than in former years, and to this extent tho increase of outgoings -will adjust itself later/' Statement of the ltevenue for the month of May/1917, compared irith the month of May, 1916.
