PRISONER ATTEMPTS TO ESCAPE
« FIRED AT AND FATALLY WOUNDED By 'telegraph.—Press Association. lnvercargill, June 11. Edward Walsh, aged -3, recently transferred from Wellington to lnvercargill to serve a sentence of three years' reformative treatment, attempted to escape while working on the reclamation area. Warder Douglas called on the man to Btop, but tho prisoner continued running. The warder hred low with a revolver, the bullet ricochetting from the water and lodging in the prisoner. Walsh was removed to the hospital. v His condition, is fairly serious. According to advice received by Superintendent O'Donovan the prisoner, in getting away from the gaol, attempted to cross a channel of water, and the warder fired his revolver to frighten, the man. The bullet ricochetted off the water and entered the prisoner's nip and abdomen. He was removed to the hospital and died there at 6.35 p.m. An inquest is to be held.
