PATEENA'S OFFIOBttS. Tho Patcena- eigncd on most of her crew on Saturday preparatory to commencing running in tho TfelUngton-Picton-Nelson service in place of the Jlapourlka. Captain B. B. Irwiu took charge of tho Teeeel, and Mr. TjL. A. Gray signed on as firet officer. The second and third officers and purser and assistant purser did not eign 08. Mr. L. B. Roberts Joined as -nlrelees operator, and tho following engineers, joined!— First, Mr. P. J. Hickey; second, Mr. F. li. Crosbic; third, Jlr. James Elley, THE SUNKEN KOTAItE. The latest particulars received at Dunedin concerning the condition of the Kotare, consequent upon her mishap at Waika-wa, «,ro that the vessel ie now lying on an even bottom, and i 9 almost completely submerged at high tide. The captain states that ho anticipates no difficulty in raising the steamer when tho pumps are brought into operation. The vessel's sietcr keelsons are intact; also the sides of the ship and the deck. It is quite evident that the mishap happened while tho ve6scl was berthed at the ■wharf. So for as salvaging tho Kotare is concerned, it Tvas originally Intended that Mr. A. Morrison (Lloyd's surveyor) -should have gone south, but it was decided, to endeavour to get a email steamer to go down, taking all tho necessary equipment for tho Ealv.ago work. It ie probable that such a vessel irill bo procured, Hid Mr. Jtorriaon will iio flown to supervise the
1 6alv«Kp operations. Speaking to a- "Daily Tunes representative Mr. Ramsay stated that tho theory that, the vcaenl struck a sandbank might eventually prove to bo incorrect, and at present tho accident to tho ship was something of a mystery to him. Jle had vo doubt, however, that sho would bo refloated. Messrs. Johnston and Co. advise that tho Hum will not now como to Wellington as was previously expected, and the Koutunui is duo to-day in her place. The Koutunui will leave again to-day for tho East Coa'et at 5 p.m. After discharge of ahout 100,000 ft. of timber at Dunedin tho schooner Houto will go to Port Chalmers, where an , auxiliary set of two 60 h.p. Scandia- oil engines will bo installed. A Dunedin exchange says that Messrs. filler Bros, aro making good headway with tho raising of the dredsro Progress, which sank at her moorings in Carey's Bay some time ago. The vessel is now lying iu towards Deborah Bay, and is beached4n shallow water, the decks beins uncovered at low tide. The pump is now in position, and ie kept workine at low •water. It is eipeoted that the vessel will he refloated some timo this week. The work ol transforming the vessel into a cargo steamer will bo proceeded with. The engines and holler Trill arrive from Wellington in the course of a few days. • The harbourmaster (Captain P. M'lntrre) reported to. the "Wanganui Harbour Board on Friday that there was a depth, of 19 feet 3 inches on the bar at the top «f spring tides, nnd 16 feet 3 inches at the top of neap tides. The least depth in the river varied from 13 feet 6 inches at high water springs to 10 feet 6 inches at the top of neap tides.
