REAL MELODRAMA
"MAEKIED TO THE WEONG MAN."
The Brandon-Crenier Dramatic Company made another change of .bill at the Grand Opera House- on Saturday night, the new production being a military drama, "Married to tho Wrong Man. Ruth Carlton, wlioso wrongs form the theme of the play.l is a 'beautiful orpnan »irl, who helieve9 herself to bo tho daughter of the rascally innkeeper .who has raised her from babyhood. The innkeeper supposes the girl to be an heiress, and plans to marry her to his companion in crime, Captain Deering. The captain wants Rtita's money, but_ Private, Gladwin, a gentleman ranker m Deering's regiment, loves her for herselt alone. The regiment is ordered on service, and Deering and Gladwin both desert, the captain intending to marry tho lieiress and flee tho country, and the private determined to eavo the unhappy maiden. Tho captain reaches Ruth first, drags her to the registrar and marries her. Then he takes her' to a retreat in the neighbouring eeaport, tears from her neck tho key that opens the mysterious box containing tho history; of her life, and finds that sho is not an heiress af--ter all. Disappointed in pocket, the ruffian turns to wreck his wicked will on the trembling maid. But in the nick of time Private Gladwin arrives, strikes the bridegroom to the floor, and offers his protection to the bride. The captain is angered. He rudely offers to sell hie matrimonial outfit ciieap, and Private Gladwin becomes a buyer, cash down. The captain hastens to foreign parts, and the ranker is left in possession of an awkward piece of property. The first act ends there. In the succeeding acts the play becomes really eventful, and Ruth has to endure many troubles, including a sensational trial at the New Bailey on a charge of murder, before the denouement is reached and she is united finally to lor faithful lover. The members of the Brandon-Cremer Company played this melodrama in suitable -fashion Mr. Maurice Tuoliy was forceful and soldier-like as Private Gladwin, who rose subsequently to commissioned rank. Miss Mabel Hardingo had the part of Ruth Ciirlton, and Mr. Edgar Kenna was the unpleasant Captain Deering. Mr. Frank Neil supplied tho comedy element capably, and the oljiCT members of the company all did their work reasonably well, tlio staging was generally effective.
