The Bureau of Standards has been engaged in efforts to promote safety at sea by moans of radio Instruments (says a New York contemporary). A complete 1kilowatt equipment for radio communication has been designed for installation in a lighthouse, and another has been i.uetalled on a, lighthouse tender. A' fogaignallvne apparatus for lighthousos has also been designed. This .will send out automatically a characteristic signal' once every minute on a short wave-length, so that it may bo received readily by all vessels within a few milc6 of tho lighthouse. As a complement to this device, a simple type ot direction finder has been designed for ships. With this apparatus vessels will be able to get their bearings from a lighthouse which is sending out fog signals, and it will be usefiTl for other purposes. Models have been constructed for receiving both long and short waves. MESS TABLE GOSSIP Mr. T. 0. Sawyers, second mate of tho Kahiki, has como ashore, and has been replaced by Mr. R. Atkinson. Mr. E. W. Godfroy, first mate of the Kamo, lias como ashore, and Mr. A. E. Young has replaced Mr. E. Jackson, second mate, who has come ashore from the same vessel. That a clean occasionally has a good effect on a, ship's, steaming was emphasised yesterday, when the Waverley made the trip from Patea to Wellington in 13} iiours. Previous to lier overhaul 15 hours was tho best, tlmo the vessel made for somo months. There is at present a movement in Newcastle for the establishment of a joint shipping committee, on which ovcrflTa, interstate, and coastal companies- will ho represented. AH matters of interest 1o the shipping community will be then dealt with as a body, instead of, as at present, by individual companies. It is expected that the Opawa, Wakntu. and Awahou will all be ready to resume mnning at tho end of next week. At present tho vessels arc undergoing annual overhaul. Tho Opawa is at Blenheim and the other two at Wellington.
