SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Wedding at St, Peter's Church. A military wedding took plnce in St. Peter's Church yesterday, when Lieutenant Conieillo H. do Mey-d'Alkcmade, of the Gth Wellington Mounted Regiment, youngest son of Mr. J. .r. de Mey-d'Alke-made, late Director of Physical Training in New Zealand, was married to Miss Ann Gibson, onlv daughter of Mr. W. Gibson, of "Rockfield," Kiwitea. _ The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of white georgette over glace silk, the train embroidered with tiny pink rosebuds. Her veil was fastened with a coronet of orange blossoms, and she carried a bouquet of white flowers, with touches 'of palest pink. Miss Kathleen Cobbe, of Feilding, was the bridesmaid, and wore a frock of Wedgewood blue crepe de chine, with a black" hat. She carried a bouq.net of autumn-tinted flowers and foliage. The best man was Lieutenant ,T. T. Simpson, and Lieutenant H. J. Marshall was groomsman. Both officers belong to the Thirtieth Reinforcements (.1 Company). The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. Watson. 'A reception was afterwards held at the Midland Hotel, Mrs. M. Perry, aunt, of the bride, receiving the guests. Mrs.' do Mey-d'Alkcmade, mother of tho bridegroom wore green shot silk with a pretty hat to match, and Mrs. Pony was in a navy costume with hat en suite. Major Samuels,, of the Gth .Wellington Mounted Reffiment, who lias just returned to New Zealand invalided from tho front, proposed the health of the bride and bridegroom, and various other toasts were honoured. Among the guests were Mrs. and Miss Cobbo (of Feilding), Mrs. and Hiss Perry (Feilding), Miss Wiiinio Douglas (Mount Royal), Miss King, Mrs. and Miss Ritchie, Mrs. 31. P. Cameron and Miss Cameron, Colonel Samuels, N.Z.ti.F., Captain Ban-. N.Z.E.F.. Miss N. Buchau--1 an,' Messrs. Tom and W. Gibson (brothers of the bride), Miss J. ,1. do Mey-d'Al-kemade. Mr. Rupert Morrison (Blairlogie), Mr. Guy Williams, Mr. J. 1). Henrys. Tho bridegroom, who left with tho Main Body of the Expeditionary' Force, look part in tho landing at Gallipoli, and was for two years on active service, being twico wounded. Concert at Victoria Military Hospital. An excellent concert was given in the Victoria Military Hospital on Thursday night. It wns organised by Miss Ida Green, assisted by Miss Jean Turner and Mr. Wood, and was greatly appreciated by the soldiers and their friends. The programme, opened with a mandoline sextette (arranged by Miss Turner); Miss Zelma Hugo sang "Coming Homo," "You aro My Darling," and "When Song is Sweet"; Miss Nellie Cnstie sang "Lad of Aline": and Mr. A. L. Picket!: sang ."The Mighty Deep," "Friond o' Miue," 'and "Deep in My Heart." Songs were also sung by M'iss C. Dibley, Miss Newman, and Miss Eileen Maearthy; a quartet for violin, 'cello, flute, and piaJio was given by tho Misses Elsie and Jean Turner and Elsie ajid Gwon Cooney. Miss Mary Dunne contributed a character sketch, and Mr. Walter Wood recited. Tho comic clement was'represented by Mr. Leo. Shaddick and Master Winston Maearthy in a number of jsongs and impersonations. Miss Bellworthy and Mr. Dalton played tn'o accompaniments, and the concluding item was a vocal trio by Messrs. Pickett, Shaddick, and W. Wood. After the concert Misa Greon and her friends were the guests of the matron and nurses at supper. Sailors' Friend Society. Miss J. Petrie and concert party gave an enjoyable entertainment at Itho Snlora.' Friend Society on. Thursday night. The party included: Mrs. Ken-, nedy,' the Misses Chapman, M. .Tones, Lilian Petrie, N. Jennings, Janie Petrio, and Mr. M'Gregor. A hearty vote of thanks was'.passed j and responded to by the hostess. A .new billiard board, presented by Messrs). Scales, Ltd., was open-, cd for the use of the men. Mr. Moore, missioner, voiced • his sincere thanks to tho donors. Ho was followed by three sailors, who spoke gratefully of the gift. Their remarks were received with cheers. Mrs. Buick. wife of, the member for Palmerston North, is not in the best of health. She will come to Wellington for the session in the hope that tho change will bo beneficial. '• Many will re;ret to learn that Mrs. Page, wifo of Mr. Bernard F. A Military Wedding. On Saturday last a military wedding took place at" the Presbyterian Church, .Roseneath, when Miss Annie <le la Maine Tbirkcl), .second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Thirkell, of Oriental Bay, was married to Captain Herbert Wilson Carbury, N.Z.V.C., eldest sou of Mr. and Mrs. .1". Carbury, Dublin, Ireland. The bride, who was given away by her fattier, wore a dress of crepe-de-chino and ninon, with a veil and oraugo blossoms. She was attended bv her cousin, Miss Hilda . Women's Christian Temperance Union. On Thursday afternoon the Wellington Central Branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union held at "at home" in the Wedleyan .schoolroom, Thonitloii. The members of the .Ladies' Guild received the visitors and provided afternoon tea. Mrs. S. Evans presided, and musical and elocutionary items wore contributed by Mrs. Kddy and Miss Clark. Miss Napier, of Edinburgh, who has been obliged to extend her stay in the Dominion owing to the War Regulations, addressed the gathering, and told of the. great work being done by women at Homo—more particularly the work of the Scottish women, who organised the Scottish Women's Hospital, and who had sent women doctors and nurses to France, Serbia, and even Russia. Many wellknown New Zealand women were helping in connection with the Scottish organisation. Although Scotland is more advanced than England in the matter of temperance, staled the speaker, there was still much need of reform in. that, direction. Mrs. Napier told of the awful conditions of drink among the workers on the Clyde. The restrictions of areas had done some good, but still greater reforms were needed. In one part, of Edinburgh, known as the Royal Mile, with the Castle at one end and the Palace at tho other, ,pnblichouses were studded along the street, and the most terrible slums existed. Much good had been done in this neighbourhood by the centres established bv the 8.W.T.A.. an organisation akin to the W.0.T.T.:. Mrs. Nanier stated that slie belonged la a suffrage society, which was non-militant, and on-returning to New Zealand, after an absence of It years, she was disappointed to find that many needed reforms were still unaccomplished. Mrs. Nnnier appealed to all wom°n to pray and work for the much-needed reforms in the drink traffic. [ Y.W.C.A. NOTES The speaker at tho Y.W.C.A. Sunday service will Ijo Mr. Smith, of tho Y.M.C.A. National Headquarters, tins service, which is held for girls and young women at 1.15 in the club-room?, Herbert Street, is open in all, as also is tho lea and social hour following. The opening of a Y.W.C.A. Club for Australasian Nurses supplied a real need in Bombay. "With this cud in view, Lady Helen Munro Ferguson sent .£lllO, and'other money was speedily forthcoming. As .=OOll as a suitable building was obtained it was »t once put in order and opened formally by the Governor, when the nurses from the ships and hospitals were present. The club is not residential, but is open from night in tho morning till the snmo hour in the eveninrr. A girls' servico was held last Sunday, when seventy-five we're present. Tho bright singing was a. feature of the service, and an impressive message was delivered by Miss Johnstone, one of tho girl leaders. Last Saturday, a. number of tho girls, under tho leadership of Miss Bates, went for a ramble in pursuit of Nature lore. These gatherings are (0 be hold monthly. In answer to her appeal for croquet sets for the soldiers at the Victoria Military Hospital, the Mayoress (Mrs. ,T. P. Luke) has received two sets, one from Mr. Robert Lee, Lower Hntt, and another from Mr. Nee, of Vivian Street. Both will bo greatly appreciated by the soldiers. Included in the recent packing at the Town Hall were twenty-six cases of transport comforts. On Thursday the Wellington quota of parcels for the men in Mesopotamia was also completed. The Catholic Women's Knitting Guild held a very successful day at the Wellington Red Cross Shop yesterday, the sum of 4:257 being realised, In charge of tile fancy stall were Mrs. MncarthyReid, Mrs. Rutter, Mrs. Bylands, Mrs. Sullivan, and Miss Agnes Kennedy. Tho produce stall was attended to by Mrs. Corrigan, Mrs. Burke, Mrs. O'Sullivan, and Miss Kennedy; sweets, Mrs. Sommerville, Mrs. Compton, and Miss Egnn; Kikes, Mrs. Scott, Mrs. O'Driscoll, and Mrs. Thrower; raffles,-Mrs. Bolton and Miss Saunders. Miss Wheeler, the very energetic secretary of the guild, assisted generally with the arrangements. Next Friday evening Major Waite is to lecture at the Pionoor Club upon experiences at tho front, tho proceeds of the lecture to go towards the club's fund for providing Dr. Agnes Bennett with a motor ambulance for her work among the Serbians. Among the recent amounts which have been received towards this fund was the sum of £Sl (the result of tho recent, sale of work and concert given by the Victoria League Concert Party), .£23 and some odd shillings from the Spinsters" Club (result of jumble sale), and .£3o'l2s.
