He pleaded not jrualty, and in an aggressive manner disputed tho evidence of the constabto who arrested him. Ho was. however, convicted and fined 203., in default seven days' -imprisonment, on the first, charge, and 10s. with tho option of three days' imprisonment on tho second.

For insobriety one first offender was convicted and discharged.

OIVIL OASES. The Inspector of Awards (Air. L. G. Lightfoot) proceeded against J. Telford, dairyman, of Miramar, for a breach of tho dairymen's award in employing three juvenile assistants and paying thom only 75., 65.. and 6s. respectively, instead of £1 per week a© required by the award, also, with employing threo assistants when only entitled to ono. The Magistrate, in commenting on tho cage, said that in thus employing'boys it was doing them harm, as it was detrimental to their education, and this could not be \encouraged. Mr. A. J. Luke, who appeared for the defendant, 6aid that owing to tho disturbance in tho labour market it was difficult to obtain capable assistants. Judgment was gi-ven "for plaintiff for £3, with costs. Tho Inspector of Awards aleo proceeded against A. Armstrong for a breach of. the dairymen's award in allowing a boy to assist him on the cart or in the delivery of milk* on April 10. Judgment was given for plaintiff for 10s., with, costs. F. Croesley, veterinary surgeon, sued •T. M'Namara, motor driver, to 6s. for, professional services in attending, a horso belonging to defendant. After hearing evidence judgitfent was entered for plaintiff for the full amount claimed with costs totalling 16s. Mr. "W. L. Itothenberg appeared for plaintiff, and ID*. J. IT. Dale for defendant. CI/AIM ITO DAMAGES. Tho hearing of tho case brought by Munt, Cottrell and Co., I/td., for whom Mr. T. W". Hislop appeared, to recover from, the City Council the sum of £129 12s. 6d. damages alleged to have been sub-. tained by plaintiff's motor lorry in a collision with a tramcar in Courtenoy Place v»as concluded yesterday. The caso was partly heard last week' by Mr. W, G. Jtiddell, 8.M., and yesterday further, considerable ovidenco was taken. For tho defence, 7£r. J. O'Shea, City Bolioitor, called several witnesses.. who generally stated that tho lorry struck the tramcar. Tho step of the tramcar wa* produced showing a break about tho middle. Tho Magistrate said tho evidence in the case was very conflicting, and ho would reserve his decision. ; UNDEFENDED OASES.
