SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Victoria League Meeting. A meeting of the Victoria League Executive was held yesterday at the residence of Jtisd Contes. Thcro was a good attendance ot members, and Miss Coates (president) presided. Correspondence from England and tho colonies was read and discussed, and in reply to a letter which had been 6ent to the Hon. A. L. Herdman. from tho league, urging that women patrols should be appointed, tho Minister's reply, in which he stated that ho would givo the matter further consideration, was read to the meeting. Mr. Herdman also promised that ho would let tho league know his decision should he decide to take further action regarding this question. Matters in connection with tho Victoria League's next Red Cross Day were discussed, and Miss Coates announced her intention of arranging a bridgo party at her residence on Juno 13. Members wero asked to notify Miss Coates as to the number of players they would bo responsible for each, so that table 3 could be made up for either bridge or euchre. By request, Miss Itothenberg (honorary librarian of the Sydney Street Soldiers' Club) ■ was present, and outlined to the meeting her plans in regard to the proposed soldiers circulating library for Trentham Camp. Members agreed to give her all assistance that lay within their power. Miss Eothenberg, with Mrs. .T. D. Gray, agreed to canvass Victoria League members for the benefit of their next Red Cross Day. It was decided that executive meetings should be held mi the first Tuesday of every month at Miss Coates*.
For tho Red Cros'i. Two little nieces of Miss Cooper, Mollio and Sallic Williams, with their girl friends, organised a Bed Cross day at Mrs. ilex. Williams', St. Lawrence, Otaue, ono day last week. Their efforts wero most successful, and realised the large sum of £S7. Tho sale consisted of dainty articles of needlework, produce, and afternoon tea, and tho settlers from all round took tho keenest interest, attending in numbers, and being glad of tho opportunity of assisting the Bed Cross work promoted l)y these young enthusiasts. ,£SO was sent to Miss Cooper, as a donation to her flower stall at tho Wellington Red Cross Shop, and this 6lio handed in to tho secretary, tho rest being divided among the local Red Cross societies. On August 21 a similar effort will bo made at the Wellington Red Cross Shop. A number of young Red Cross girl workers liavo set their minds to raiso a considerable sum for tho wounded soldiers, and liavo been for some time working hard lor this end. Tho help of tho young peoplo for this causo stimulates the efforts of all interested in tho work. Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Logan (Napier) are visiting Wellington. Tho wedding took place quietly at tho residence of Mv. and Mrs. G. A. Brook, Epsom, Auckland, of their eldest daughter, Miss Jessio Brook, to Mr. R. The Women's National Reserve lias recently organised small bands of its members to attend at the National Office of the association on certain afternoons, and evenings .to assist in the rapidly-increas-ing clerical work of the office. Mrs. Every (Dunedin) is staying with her aunt, Mrs. Holmes, Hawkestono Street. Mrs. H. Stocker (New Plymouth) is visiting Archdeacon and Mrs. Stocker, Chris tchurch. Sister Margaret G. Davies, 22/112, of the N.Z.A.N.S., was reported in yesterday's hospital and progress report to be ill"in hospital. The condition was stated to be "not severe." Mrs. Percy Beattie (Eskdale) has re turned to Hawko's Bay from tho Upper ttutt. Tho wedding was celebrated in North Coulburn, N.S.W., recently, of Mr. Harry Garner, only son of the lato Mr. Richard Garner, of Christchurch, New Zealand, to Miss Ivy Abrahams, fourth daughter of Mr. J. H. Abrahams, of Goulburn. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Canon Howell, and the brido was accompanied by her sister Maud as bridesmaid. The Hawke's Bay men of tlio Twentyseventh and Twenty-eighth Reinforcements were entertained at a concert given in tho Hawke's Bay Soldiers' Club on Tuesday evening. Tlio concert hall was crowded with relatives, and friends of the soldiers, and with others who have taken a keen personal interest in all matters relating to their welfare. The concert itself was most enjoyable, and after it was over the men were presented with parcels of travelling coinforts from tlio Countess ' of Liverpool Equipment Committee, represented by Mrs. ,T. 11. Williams, Mrs. Fitzherbert, and Miss Luckie. From Mr. H. M. Campbell were received three pairs of boxing glovos. Afterwards the men and their friends were entertained at supper. Mr. and Mrs. AY. A. Ileddoe have returned to Auckland from Wellington. Sister Earlv h the matron of the Aotoa Hospital at Cairo, and. has done excellent work. Sister M'Betli has also done good work with tlio N.Z.E.F. in England.
