The Hon. J. G. W. Aitkeii, M.L.C., has been forced to remain away from his office- for tfie past two days owing to a slight attack of lumbago. Mr. .T. S. Dickson; M.P. for Parnell, is a visitor to "Wellington. Lieutenant E.-L. Okey, of "Vogeltown, who is returning to New Zealand on duty is expected to arrive in Auckland shortly. _ Some few weeks ago Major H. F. Davis received a privato cablegram to _tho effect that his youngest son "Geoff," who left' as a 6ergeant in. the Fourteenth Reinforcements (subsequently seeing service in France), had been selected in the field to sit for a commission. A further private cablegram received yesterday states that Mr. Davis successfully passed for commissioned rank.
Mr. H. H. M'Cullough, formerly manager of tho Auckland branch of the British Dominion General Insurance Co., Ltd., lias been appointed general manager for New Zealand.
. One of tho oldest settlers of tho Pat'ea district, Mr. Peter Campboll, of Manutahi, died on Monday at the age of- .91 years. He served wit'h the Forest Rangers in the. Maori War, and was in business ill Normanby when tho Titokowaru rebijlion broke out. He received ,a military litnd grant at Manutnhi in ' 1870, and' has resided on it for many years. ' Francis John Wetherall, who w;as reported yesterday as killed'in faction on May 19, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Wetherall, of Itilbirnio. Prior to enlistment ho was a member of the stall of Messrs. E. W. Mills and Co. Ho was Tvell-knmvu cricket phiycr and a. member of tho' Bast Club. Mr. C. E. Taylor, Deputy-Registrar of the Supremo Court at Wanganm, was on tlio application of Mr. A. Brodie, admitted a solicitor of the Supreme Court Of Now Zealand ,by His Honour Mr. Justice Chapman on Wednesday. Tho many friends of Mr. T. C. Dawson (of Messrs. Dawson and Maudsley) will regret to learn that he has received an official cablo message stating that Jus son, Lieutenant T. H. Dawson, _ot tho How'itzor Battery (Tenth Koinforceinents), was wounded ill action on May 27. A later cablegram states that ho was admitted to a French hospital on May severely gassed, and suffering from a gunshot wound in the right arm. Lieutenant Dawson, who was a law student in tho employ of Messrs. Young and Tripe, recently wrote to lus parents that ho had practically been, continuously in. action with his battery from September 3 to March 28, and was still at it. On one occasion tho battery which he commands had tho luck to "get" a German aeroplane just as it was about to l'iso from tho ground behind the enemy .trenches, . :
Mr. B. M. C. Biirr, ,of tho Public Triliti Office, New Plymouth, was drawn in. Thursday's ballot in error (says tha
"Taranaki Herald"). Mr. Burr went into camp on February 5. lfllfi, with tho 15th N.C.O/s, and held the raulc of sergeant. Vripr to the departure of the 15th reinforcements for the front an old com. plaint to his leg broke out, and ho was discharged as medically unfit. In order to be lifted from the ballot he wont before a Medical Board about throe month* ago and was declared permanently unfit: for activo service.
Mi'. Andrew ,T. Thompson, manager of tho Bank of New Zealand at Mataura,. has been appointed manager of the Wintoil Bank, and will take up his duties within tho next fortnight.
Tho death is announced of Mr. William Francis Brogdcnf of Palmerston North, aged TO. The late Mr. Bvogden was born in Nelson, where his father was a well-known brewer in tlio early days. Later on Mr. Brogden. settlecl in tho Porirua district, and oventually' he went to Palmerston North, taking up a farm on the Rangitikei line, which lie fanned until about sixteen years ago, when, ho went -nto Palmerston and re-' tired. , The deceased gentleman had many thrilling experiences in the early days among the 'Maoris, and was wetl! known and greatly respected in the Manawatu- and Palmerston districts. Ho loaves one sister (Mrs. Smith, oS Ngaio), two daughters, a Bon, and seT« eral step-childrcn.
