AUCKLAND MEETING WINTER STEEPLECHASE AVON BY ST. ELMN. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, June G. Tho Auckland Racing Club's meeting concluded in excellent weather before a largo attendance. The track was heavy. Tho lotalisator handled JM8,329, against .£37,531 last year. Tho total fov tho meeting was ,£143,608, against .£126,516 last year, an increase of -t!17,091. Hophold was made favourite in the York Welter Handicap, but Colonel Soult, lied Ribbon, Lady Penury, Flying Camp, and Parisian Diamond wero also well backed. Though Kauri King got well away, and maintained tho lead for more j than half the distanco, it was anybody's race until • a quarter of a mile from home, when Parisian Diamond gradually worked his way from the rear and came into the straight close behind Kauri King,, with Colonel Soult close at hand. Up tho straight tho raco developed into a great strugglo between Kauri King and Parisian Diamond, tho latter securing tho verdict by half a length, as tho result of. a decidedly wellridden race. Tho Winter Steeplechase was won comfortably by St. Elmn, and judging by his consistent good form during the meeting, tho result cannot be regarded as a surprise. El Oallo was, of course, greatly, fancied by the public, and he ran a fine race. Nita had a large and confident following, but was never very dangerous. Czaronus was fairly well backed. Ho ran prominently for over two miles, and had a strong lead when he fell at the top of the hill on tho way home. This left St. Elmn well in front, going very surely. El Gallo mado a big effort to get alongside the leader, but was unable to get. on. terms, St. Elmn winning by several lengths. Ho appeared tho least distressed of the company. Bon Reve was mado a warm favourite in the Campbell Hurdles, but was never prominent. Luperino made the running, for three-quarters of a mile, when Marconi went to tho front, and maintamed the lead for tho next mile. Then 10 Onga, who had been lying handy, took command, with Sir Solo closo beTo Onga won comfortably, Sir Solo just beating Cast Iron for sccoud place by half a length, with Marconi lading away fourth.
