BRAWN IN THE BALLOT

MORE APPEALS PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSIONER'S EVIDENCE The First Wellington Military gerrice Board sat in Wellington again yesterday. JThe chairman is Mr. p. G. A. Cooper, 5.11.>: and the other (members of the board are Messrs. D. Mlaren and W. Terry. Captain AValker is the military representative! Air. A. -D. Thomson, .Assistant Public Service Commissioner, attended to give evidence respecting an application which has'been before the board on several occasions for the temporary exemption of half-a-dozen officers in the service- of the Public Trust Office. Mt. Thomson was questioned as. to what assistance the Commissioner had given the Public Trustee in the matter of relieving fit men for tho war by securing temporary men. Mr. Thomson said the Coramispioners had done all they could to help the Public Trust Office, and had offered £1 or i£s per week for- temporary men. They had even given £& as a commencing salary in one case, but the highest for a purely' clerical man was .£5. The salaries ' the temporary men were getting were higher thaii the' permanent men's, and that fact was causing dissatisfaction in tb.B service, as tho permanent men had to show the higher-paid temporary men how to do tho work. Tho work of the officers of the Public Trust needed special training and knowledge, and junior officers could do the work-better than outsiders'; The employment by the temporary hands could be terminated at a. day's -notice;-but 6uch a termination was unlikely if a'man behaved well, and was competent. - ■ \ Tho decision of: the board in the! appeals was reserved.
