LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
BIRTHDAY HONOURS Sir,—l read with a tinge of regret in tins morning's issue your leaderette on the Birthday honour conferred on the Mayor of Wellington. The bestowal of the Companionship of tho Order of St. -Michael and St. George is usually only a stepping-stone to further advancement in the Order. To my, miiid this mart of the Sovereign's favour is more valuable than an ordinary knighthood, which latter is often given more to mark an ttnspicious event than to reward tho actual recipient. ;It is possible that the greater distinction is in store for your indefatigable Chief Magistrate, when glorious peace with honour is proclaimed. Is it. not also within the regions of possibility thnt the City of Wellington itself may be raised to the dignity of a Lord Mayorship Hence the future conjures iip visions of Hie Rt. Hon.- Sir J. P. Luke, K.C.M.G. Why not?—T am, etc., . CECIL HAKTJUDGE. June i.
